I changed my 2010 Prius 12v battery today. I bought it at advance auto parts, the battery was AutoCraft Platinum AGM Battery, Group Size S46B24R, 370 CCA. I installed it by following the steps 1. Disconnect the negative 2. Disconnect the postive and remove the vent connection 3. Connect the positive and connect the vent 4. Connect the negative When I tried to check if it works, the prius screen is completely dark. When I press the power button nothing happens. Should I be doing something else? I am not sure what I missed. Any advice please help? thanks.
Maybe, the new battery have low charge. Try with a tester. Or, check again positive and negative, can be inverted Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
You should be able to check the manufacturing date on the battery. It should be within the last 6 months. You may very well have gotten an older battery that, as the previous posted suggested, could be in a low state of charge. Sometimes the batteries for a Prius sit around for awhile in the warehouse because they are an unusual size.
Yeah check the voltage with a multimeter, between the posts on the battery. If 12.something volts, then check the connection connections are tight.
Not to hijack, but I just purchased a Solar battery tester. Is it acceptable to test with the battery still connected to the vehicle or does it have to be isolated?
It's fine to check to battery in the car. You have to hook up directly to the posts though. It can be hard to get the jaws actually touching the post and not just the cable clamp, and fwiw I've found it ok on the clamps. But try. Also, one side of the jaws has a little metal button on it, and also the cable running into that side. I'd think that's the business side, and best to ensure that's the side touching the post.
Got the Solar and tested the CCA, reading of 292 returned and resting just after shutting car off was reading 12.43. I don’t see a CA label on the battery, do I need to test that as well? From the reading it appears somehow this battery is still healthy
I struggled to find the CCA rating for OEM Yuasa battery, looked around the Yuasa website. I think I settled on 310? Something like that, 300~325. Typically a battery in good health will be significantly higher than rated. A brand new OEM Yuasa in good health you'd be seeing maybe 340~350 CCA, and voltage around 12.7. What value did you enter for CCA before doing the test? IIRC I use 310. I'll do the test on our OEM; it's sitting in the garage still, and post in a sec. I recently recharged it, a week or two back, did a full refurb recharge with CTEK 4.3, so it'll give you a counterpoint. Keep in mind: I replaced this battery, 3.5 years back, it seemed borderline then. Maybe a little premature. If you look on my pic it’s hard to tell but the CCA on the battery is listed at 325. So it’s not that far below spec. You think it should still be replaced? The number I could not locate and test for was the CA number. If it is failing why does the Solar still give me a “healthy” reading, or does it basically have to be dead to say replace?
Yeah odd. Again, I get the sense that anything below rated CCA is a bad sign, and the voltage too seems low. I'm not paying enough attention though: this is not the original battery, it's a freshly replaced battery? It should not in that case be displaying lower than spec CCA, in my opinion. A fresh purchased battery might have lowish voltage due to sitting around , but CCA is usually above spec. Talk to the store, tell them the readings you're getting?
This is not a fresh replace, it was manufactured 12/2011. The previous owner told me he replace the battery, but did not tell me when he actually replaced it.
