Terrible OEM cabin filter

i know, the stupid glove box is a pita.

 

If you don't tell the car, it won't know if the filter is upside down or not.

 

Exactly! Filter large first or small/I don't care/LOL

I am thinking of retirement at 68 and maybe a Golf cart or a Nisan Leaf to drive to Publix/LOL

 

OR you can get K&N one for $40 and it would last you lifetime

same here, i bought a fram, and when you try to push it in, the sides collapse leaving big gap.

 

had a great experience yesterday, picked up filters for my wifes hycam and my pip. they are the same, and i thought that was a good move on toyota's part. i asked the parts guy if he could give me a discount, and he dropped the price fro $26. to $20., i thought that was nice of him, they are $18. on amazon.

when i went to change the hycam, i found out you don't have to unhook the glove box, there's a panel in the back, then the regular filter cover. much easier than the prius! but i also found out that both cars come with charcoal filters standard. so i'm going to return these and get charcoal, i have been very happy with how they have performed when you press the filtration button.

 

What filter did everyone decide on installing and why?

K&N VF2000 Cabin Air Filter doesn't look bad.

 

Continues use of AC dries the humidity from the air in the car, if you don't believe it, try it, then turn off AC and see how fast it changes.

 

Because it lets go of all the moisture that has condensed on the evaporator. Any time you turn off AC this will happen, and if you hang in there for 10~15 minutes, that humidity "dump" is over.

Relentless AC use is very similar to an addictive drug: there are withdrawal symptoms, lol.

 

What you should do is mark the filter you put in the car.. I'm not convinced that rodents nest so often as the dealer says. Then they show you the damages filter. Well you have no way of knowing if that was your filter....so mark your filter with a sharpie and then when they show you the filter the next time, you will know. It's a big profit center

The dealer tried that same move on me when I used to go there for service. My filter was marked with a date in red marker, they brought me one while I was in the waiting area that was filthy and not mine, trying to convince me to drop $50 CAD for a new one. It was the event that finally finished me off with them and it’s been DIY ever since.

 

We should cross 80K kms very soon, maybe this tank. I've been 100% DIY maintenance, and have yet to change either the cabin or engine filter, and they both look good still. The cabin filter's a little grungy but c'mon: 20 years ago we didn't even have these, and survived. The engine filter still looks very good, I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever change it.

 

OEM Lifetime Filter?

 

Well, only 50K miles. The engine filter on ours looks virtually new; no way I'm changing it. The cabin filter, meh, a little grungy is all. Westcoast BC is not very dusty I think.

 

I do like to reiterate that the Fram filter, in new condition, is black in color because of its carbon composite. It is not the dirt that it trapped. On the other hand, the original Toyota filter, is white in color when new. I only judged by their ability to trap the dirt and compare the price between them. In my opinion, it saves me money by using Fram and I don't mind doing it at twice the interval and is still cheaper.

Yes. Toyota filter, when new, the pleats are white. Fram carbon filter, when new, the pleats are black (due to carbon composite).

The one we got from the factory, still in there btw, is an off-white, just some sort of unbleached paper.
