Just picked up this beast and loving every minute of it. With a few tweaks I feel it stands out even more. Window tint-1st mod 2nd mod-wheels I’m debating whether or not to step up to 17’s with a lightweight wheel. I’m not sure I can stand the small 15’s for long. I would love 17’s for a bigger wheel and somewhat better ride quality......but I don’t really feel like switching out the tires as nobody wants tires like this in most cases. I’d be lucky to sell them for $250. But the more I look at these I like them ALOT. I may go with Toyota’s OEM 15” alloy wheels. Part# PT945-47160. Thoughts? Side by side comparison
be careful with 17's ride quality will likely be worse. handling/performance will be slightly better, but comfort aka soft ride will be worse. having had fancy alloys for years on bmw's mercedes cadillac. i like the soft ride of a taller tire in a normal car. sports car?? fine, it has to have high performance wheels. daily driver?? regular wheels is nicer ride, easier to maintain , less expensive. i like having a hubcap, if wife scuffs the wheel its a 25 dollar hubcap , not a 200 -500 dollar repair/replacement. tires are mucho cheap for the 15's. easier to damage a 17 vs the 15, potholes, etc, need a new wheel. ugh. alloy corrodes and gets ugly, has to be refinished. cheapo hubcap covers that up nicely! only complaint i had about my clk430 i had for 19yrs was the low profile tires, and they were only 17's !!! i must have had 12 wheels refinished over the years and replaced 3 due to damage.
I hear you on the hubcaps. Here’s my thought. The Prime is too beautiful to have hubcaps....this is the look I’m going for with the Toyota wheels. I plan on keeping the stock tires, but removing the existing wheels/hubcaps and adding these alloy wheels (part# PT945-47160-DO THEY COME WITH CENTER CAPS???) , plus I’ll have to switch the existing tpms sensors over. Next winter I’ll put on Blizzaks and then use the factory wheels/hubcaps and buy new tpms sensors for that setup. I like hubcaps for the winter so that ice/snow cannot easily get inside and jam everything up (brakes, wheel, etc) Thoughts?
sounds like a plan. most dont spring for the extra tpms sensors for the snow rims. the tpms warning blinks for a minute and then stops, its not that annoying for a few months in the winter the sensors are expensive
pressure drop on the 15's shouldnt be a big problem, you will feel if a tire gets low, squishy wiggly ride. and you will see a low tire. weekly is a bit of overkill, i would go monthly with new wheels /tires. i start to check more frequently when the tires are 5+ years old and wheels are old corroded. might not happen for ten years with just the few months of use on the winter wheels. wash them and let them dry every spring when putting away.
I’m debating steel wheels on the Blizzaks and then selling the stock wheels/tires, but I just like the thought on protecting everything behind the hubcap during our harsh WI winters.
Here’s are my 3 final choices. $370 Costco sells Velox wheels Another Costco Velox choice $490 Toyota’s wheel PT945-47160
After having 17 inch rims on my previous Prius, I was really glad to move back down to the 15 inch rims on the Prime. I felt that the 17 inch rims looked nice and handled incrementally better, but really sacrificed fuel economy and gave a rough ride. For a commute car like a Prime, the 15 inch rims will let you soak up torn up streets in the city without breaking a sweat. Now, if the car is meant to be an enthusiast car, that's a different story!
I’m ok with the 15’s....but I gotta take those hubcaps off! I’m down to those 3 choices I posted above. Tough decision.
The only Toyota wheels that look nice are the European ones. The ones under the hubcaps are bad, the ones posted above are worse.
I hear you, but those other wheels are not “ugly” by any means. Velox is a well known company Costco stands by for a reason.
I just said the Toyota ones were ugly - the one under the hub cap and the one you posted. The European one is quite nice, in my opinion.
I ended up going with these in 15’s....love the look. Just summer wheels of course. Velox/Costco Wheels Select Wheel
I tried that, but I hate the look of rims that are deep inside the wheel. Makes them look very, very tiny.
