That sounds extremely accurate. About 1 us gallon per night! You really can not beat it if you are trying to complete a bucket list on what the government feels is an acceptable amount of money for a disabled person to use to sit at home and die never having gotten to live! I refuse! I will not die without living first! I was not born to work like a slave and then just die! There is way too much to experience in this life to spend the rest of my life sick on a couch or in a bed not seeing what the world has to offer! Thank God for Penelope!

Basically (or paradoxically, as the case may be), the 2nd Gen Prius is a wonderful technological gem, sparkling with (yet to be discovered by many,) amazingly secret abilities! The beauty and practicality of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive has long eluded the common motorist - many literally haven’t got a clue! To paraphrase the infamous “Peter Griffin”......’Why aren’t we funding this....?!!!’

Do you mean it was released in Feb 2017 or was that a typo? To be released in Feb 2019 maybe? I got a little bit confused? Is this book out now or coming out in February?

i purchased my 2007 in june w/ 210k miles and the mfd says 42.3 mpg. however, on a recent trip from los angeles, ca to san diego, ca and back i averaged 48 mpg. got this figure by dividing the miles driven by gallons of gas used (filled up at the the same gas station i topped off at). it should also be noted that i’m not a typical hypermiling prius driver and always have the a/c on. i also changed/flushed everything (spark plugs, air filter, oil, inverter/ice coolant, cvt fluid, multiple bottles of techron, etc) after i bought it.

Yes, I have an 07 with about 185,000 and a traction battery that is giving me the BIG RED TRIANGLE every few days. I still get 47-48 all around driving. I get rid of the red triangle by disconnecting the negative terminal on the 12 volt battery for 10-20 seconds. Reconnect and no code for a few days.

Bear in mind the rubber bladder we have for a fuel tank. You really need to measure multiple consecutive fills to get a true reading. The amount of fuel you can put in it varies from tank to tank. Judging by fueleconomy.gov and fuelly.com, if you consistently average 43+ you're doing fine. Make sure you track it over multiple tanks and don't just pick a tank here and a tank there.

oh yea for sure. tbh i dont even pay attention to my actual/average mpg anymore because my wallet tells me that it’s considerably higher than my lifted 4x4

I was just replying to assure the OP that gen 2s are still capable of 40+ mpg(y)

I bought a Gen2 which initially got the same mpg as yours. I also did the tune up as you have done. That brought up my mpg to 40. After this, a wheel alignment and Fluids change brought the final increase to just 43 mpg in mixed-driving.

    Hello, I'm new here.

First-sorry for my bad english. I live in Poland.

    I own Prius 2 2008 with 176 000km. I bought it four months ago.

I replaced 12V battery, spark plugs, fluids(CVT too) and my Prius need about 5-5.5 L/100km (43-45 mpg).
I also cleaned traction battery fan according to 12V battery changing and then fuel consumpion went down from 6-6.5L/100km to 5-5.5L/100km.

we have a 2008 Prius we bought new and have owned for the last 10 years. It has 135,000 miles on it. We average 51 mpg. Tires = Michelin Defenders front tires at 42 psi rear at 40 psi, oil level is maintained half way mark on the dipstick. We drive it mainly on flat roads and usually around 45 to 50 mph. Sensible driving habits, no quick starts or racing or jamming on the brakes- maintain good following distances to be able to coast if possible rather than braking to slow down. Live in a nice part of the country where there aren't a lot of traffic jams or people getting upset if you drive at a reasonable pace. Keep tires rotated and aligned and do all regular maintenance at the scheduled intervals myself.
this has been a wonderful car for us. Other than regularly scheduled maintenance I have had to repair/ replace three items, 1 replace three way valve on cooling system, replace brake actuator, replace front wheel bearing drivers side. These 3 repairs have happened in the last 2 years of our ownership.

I have a 2005 that I bought with 144K currently with 151k. I drive about 70 miles a day and get 49-51 mpg calculated by dividing miles driven by gallons at fillup. Highway speeds rarely exceed 72 mph. Of the70 miles driven daily 55 is highway the rest is local roads.

When my son was driving the car for high school he was averaging 38 mpg. That was all local roads and a teenager's heavy foot. That was double the mpg of the truck (18 mpg) he was driving prior to that.

Driving my 2008 in the Torrance, CA area (fairly flat) has given me an average of about 42-44 during the summer.

It has 75,000 miles, I run my Defender T+H tires at 42/40. I bought about half a year ago with 69,000 on it.

I've been very satisfied with the car.

I just picked up an 06 a few weeks ago 113 k km's on the clock and got through 1.5 tanks so far

First tank was 997km's (full to flashing one box) display showed 24.9 KM/L or 58.5 US MPG
Current tank is 6 boxes out of 10 left and i'm at 460KM's and display shows 23.5 KM/L or 55.2 US MPG.

Ive done more 80-100km/h motorway driving this current tank as I start earlier this week so less traffic on the road. Do it actually seems like it's better in the stop go/ slow motorway traffic than free moving.

Kia Ora koe and welcome to PriusChat.
That's 4.01 L/100 km and 4.25 L/100 km, respectively. Very good numbers. Your car must be pretty well set up. Are you using any special techniques? What octane rating are you using? What are your tyre pressures, just the standard 240 kPa Front/230 kPa Rear (35 PSI F/33 PSI R)?

How many litres did you add after your first tank, if you know? If you want to track your tanks and keep your lifetime averages, setting up an account on fuelly is a good way to do this. Pretty easy to do the input while at the pump using the phone app too.
70- 80 km/h is pretty much the sweet spot. I have found that too much stop/go, particularly when it uses the battery down to 2 bars, to have a big impact on economy. Then 80-100 km is pretty good. Above 105 km/h (who does that in NZ, eh?) starts to bite into the economy. I thought I'd just add that by way of feedback from me.

    Keep up the good work.

    Hello Prius Drivers,

I recently, purchased a 2009 Prius 160k and I've noticed I average 35mpg according MFD and manual calculations. So the car has no check engine lights and lot historical records for the last 9 years. I was thinking I'm getting very bad mileage and I do believe my driving style has much to with my low mpg. I do tend to keep up with the local city traffic. I really haven't turned on the AC or heater so much in SoCal. People in Los Angeles tends to drive fast on surface streets and highway when it moves. If I drive on the highways I'm always in the fast lane doing at lease 65 mph to 75 mph when it moving. To make sure the car isn't having the problems I did the following maintenance and checks:
    1. I keep my tires inflated correctly
    2. new oil high mileage conventional oil 0-20wt
    3. New CVT OEM tranny oil change
    4. New Hanook tires
    5. new inverter pump and inverter fluid
    6. New radiator fluid change
    7. New OEM spark plugs
    8. New Air filter, cabin filter
    9. Clean Map Sensor
    10. Seafoam gas tank
    11. Checked my Hybrid battery and all 28cells are in excellent condition. Used ODB2 bluetooth/Torque app.
    12. My 12volt battery is oem toyota 7 year (84 months) with 2 years left on warranty the battery holds 12.5 volt no problem.

I do have roof racks and I have all my oem Prius hub cap rings on all the time. I heard the rings help with mpg and it helps with the overall drag coefficient.

So I try to hypermile the Prius when ever I can and that's about 30-50% of my driving style but LA traffic forces me to keep up with traffic and over take a-hole on the road.
Maybe the car has problem I don't know about, since this is my first Prius but I would love to get 44mpg. If I need to hypermile 100% to achieve this goal. It's not going to happen. Any suggestion or problems I don't know about the Prius that's preventing my 44 city mpg goal?

Roof rack is what's dragging your economy down. My guess. I can go 75mph on a highway all day long and get 40-42mpg with no big hills. Mine is 2007 with 206k miles. No roof racks.

Yeah, at those speeds a roof rack is like a giant sail.
