I have a few ALAC songs on my iPod Nano. I assume they'll sound just as good as FLAC from a USB stick?

I found that some mp3 recordings that I have, sound really nice with the JBL audio (As well as some of the mp4 tracks that I left after I purchased from iTunes rather than converting to mp3).

ALAC and FLAC are both lossless formats and should sound the same. The real difference is the players that can read each format.

The JBL sounds really good. I've found the Prime's default bass and treble settings are one notch too low for me. Once tweaked, it sounds really good. Of course it's garbage in, garbage out. All my recordings are either lossless FLAC or max bitrate VBR MP3's. I also take great care to make sure each song has no clipping. Clipping is where the publisher wants more volume or impact and will strip off the high and low peaks from the song. It removes detail and depth in my opinion. If you use Audacity, it can show you if a track is clipped.

Yeah, the JBL system is surprisingly good in this car and one of the reasons I got the Advanced. I store my music on my iPhone so that I always have it with me. But not being able to reliably use the USB connection for audio is becoming increasingly infuriating. Bluetooth just doesn't quite cut it. It's like this head unit is from backwards land where the wired connection is unreliable and the Bluetooth is reliable.

Also on my phone but I'm android, Samsung S6 soon to be S10x. My BT has been pretty solid with android. The only times I've ever had any drop outs was in heavy traffic, close to other vehicles. I suspect BT was being promiscuous and checking out other vehicles.

Yeah, I have had very few issues with BT (oddly enough), the sound quality just isn't near as good. Ive also tried my dad's Note 8 and get the same USB\iPod Error\Reboot behavior.

    Good to know.

Yeah I’m hearing things from songs I haven’t heard before on the JBL audio. Also, when the volume is higher (but not necessarily cranked), I can enjoy clearer sound than on previous JBL audio systems in past Prii.

Had my screen reboot for the first time since I bought the car Dec, 2017. Driving on back roads to the gym with nothing extra running in the car but the radio. Just a normal drive for me. Hope it doesn’t happen again anytime soon.

Could not agree more about the effect of clipping. And also what a great freeware program Audadity is for so many filtering and editing purposes.

I am curious about how the Prime's JBL system handles FLAC files saved to a USB memory stick. I was under the impression that the system only recognized mp3 files and, based on that, have most of my music archived as high bit rate (256 kbps or 320 kbps) mp3 files. I am quite pleased with their quality but because we have a Brennan B2 at home, I have populated it with mp3s stripped from my CD collection using NCH's "Express Rip" software.

    Brennan-B2-index.jpg

It is simple to copy selected files from the Brennan to a USB memory stick for use in the car. If have made up several different USB sticks, each with a collection of my favorite jazz, rock, Broadway, classical, R&B, etc. and keep them in the tray in the armrest console.

If the Prime's JBL system handles FLAC files, I might gradually migrate to that lossless format although it would be a chore to re-process a lot of CDs. (Obviously, converting from mp3 to FLAC doesn't provide any more quality than the mp3, so I would have to go through the ripping process CD by CD.)

I also have noticed that there is a limit to the number of folders on a USB memory stick that the Prime will let you access while driving. It appears to limit your ability to browse though more than a few screens of information while the car is in motion. When the car is stopped, you can browse the full USB and scroll to the music you want to browse.

Can the Prime JBL recognize FLAC/ALAC file formats?

Definitely ALAC via an iPod (which is what I'm using). i.e. using the .m4a extension. I see no mention of FLAC in the owner's manual.

It simply says it can read .mp3, .wma and .m4a extensions.

It can't directly. USB is just storage and relies on Entune's decoder. It can only use FLAC if it's decoded by another player first and then piped into Entune.

I've mostly moved away from constant bit rate (CBR) 256 kbps or 320 kbps MP3's and have gone to maximum quality (-V 0 extreme) VBR (variable bit rate) MP3's to save space without compromising sound quality. The file size difference is significant with imperceptible quality loss. You're going to need a sound proof room with $5K headphones and even then you might not be able to tell the difference.

I typically use Exact Audio Copy feeding LAME and/or dBpoweramp Music Converter feeding LAME to do my conversions. I manage it all with Mp3tag.

Just happened on my less than 2 month old Prime. Was driving home at night, it was a cool 90 degrees and I turned the AC off and was going about 65mph in a 55 with the windows down. Had android connected via bluetooth. Pixel 2 XL to be exact. I don't remember if I had just pressed the play button on Pandora or not. I may have.

Definitely not temp related, it's been flawless when it was 110F recently and when the car would sit in the sun. It was night and I had only been driving for about 5 mins. So the electronics was relatively cool. I was driving in EV mode.

There have been several reports of the Prime's infotainment system spontaneously rebooting for no apparent reason. The fact that it reboots may be a feature and not a bug.

Reading one of the stories contained in the Wall Street Journal's special commemorative section on the Apollo moon landing, I learrned:

"As it flashed on the lunar lander’s digital computer display, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong knew only that they were in trouble. “Give us a reading on the 1202 program alarm,” Armstrong radioed with an edge in his voice. The men were 30,000 feet above the moon and descending. . . . Twenty-seven seconds ticked off the mission clock with no answer from their home planet.Five times in all, the computer reset itself and continued flying. Armstrong jockeyed for a safe spot to land.

"The alarms signaled that the computer was overloaded and, as designed, was dumping unimportant tasks in order to keep flying safely. It could handle interruptions and power outages, literally able to be turned off and back on without interrupting the landing or any other vital maneuver. About a year before the lunar landing, NASA had asked the already busy I-Lab engineers to build into the software this so-called restart protection.

"It would be the next day before anyone figured out what had set off the program alarms. A radar unit had erroneously triggered a near constant series of calculations that overloaded the computer. The restart protection added to the software a year earlier had rescued the mission, preventing the astronauts from unnecessarily aborting it before they landed."

And, the fact that the Prime's infotainment system recovered and reset itself is a feature derived from some of the earliest software programmed over a half-century ago.

With all of the interoperative systems in the vehicle, it may be very difficult to determine what unlikely combination of events triggered the problem, but the fact that the system recovered is not all bad.

Mine rebooted again yesterday, 2nd time now. Car had spend the day sitting in a covered parking spot. Weather was a high of 90 degrees, which is low compared to the 105 days we've been having. I had been listening to the pocketcasts app last time I drove the car, so when I got in the car the bluetooth connected and the app started streaming automatically. Withing 20 or 30 secs it rebooted.

The common thing I'm seeing is that it happened both times when I first started driving/first connected to bluetooth.

I just had a similar experience where the screen would reboot every time my Pixel 2 connected via Bluetooth. It rebooted 3 times but stopped after I rebooted my phone. The phone must have been sending some Bluetooth signal that the infotainment didn't know how to handle so it rebooted.

My phone is the Pixel 2XL......what OS you running? I've stuck to Oreo 8.1

    Edit:
I've gone to the device details under bluetooth and Toyta Prius, seeing contact sharing and text messages being a couple things I could try to uncheck. It happens so infrequently tho, that I wouldn't know if it's working.

It's a pixel 2 with Android 9, August security update. This is the first time it's happened to me. I hope it doesn't get worse.

Recently purchased brand new 2019 Premium, the touchscreen restarted itself several times on long commute. I have an over 90min - 2 hour commute. I have an iPhone Xs connected via USB cable. Also, the connection to the USB was lost at some point as well and had to switch over to bluetooth. I have an OEM Apple USB cable I will swap it out with today to see if that fixes the issue. I had no idea the infotainment system was this anemic and faulty when purchasing the car, which is a shame because everything else about the car is incredible. (Besides the Sweaty Softex seats but I digress)

I'm confused and off topic... Are your Softex seats sweaty? Or are you sweaty?

Anyways, hope you figure out your issue. I thought I had the same issue, but for me, it turns out, while I was playing with the settings my hand would rest on the power button causing the system to reset. I don't use the USB.

I'm sweaty because of the Softex seats. I have swapped out the cable for a new OEM apple cable, no restarts of screen as of yet
