I have a 2004 Prius. Just replaced the 12V aux battery and now MFD does not display the “Display” screen. Other screens display fine. I’ve also had Combo meter problems and am going to pull it and have it repaired. When I have it pulled I can easily pull the MFD as well. Is this common to lose just the one screen and still be able to use the other three? Is it associated at all with the bad Combo meter? The Combo meter goes blank intermittently and has problems powering off. I also find it weird this happened when the 12v was replaced today... Trying to see if anyone else has correlated the bad Combo with the now blank Display screen on the MFD.

There does seem to be anecdotal information to suggest a correlation of removing power from the CM to it finally failing. No-one (electronics guru) has offered an explanation of why removing the power would cause the capacitors to finally go over the edge.

I believe the "Display" (Consumption/Energy Monitor) screens use info from (or via) the CM, so it is not surprising that it is affected by the CM not working.

In any case, you need to have your CM repaired and then you will have no more problems. One thing to bear in mind, if you are getting anywhere close to 299,999 mi, you might consider retrofitting a 2006-2009 CM and light cluster to your 2004. If you are interested, Matt @Texas Hybrid Batteries can give you the details. You can start a conversation with him, if you have any questions.

Thanks! You are right, the info does populate on the Display screen from the CM or vice versa. I’m at 190k so I’ve got a bit of time before confronting a newer cluster ‍♀️ I figure my original 2004 12V battery would go sometime since it was 15 years old but didn’t think it could create collateral damage. I’m going to pay someone to pull my CM, it looks like a lot of prying and finessing to me. Just watched a YouTube video and after the guy unfastened the hundredth thing I got scared.

I doesn't make sense to do the job twice, may as well bite the bullet and do it now, especially as you will be paying someone to do it. The labor cost won't be that much more to pull the light cluster and replace it as well. Just a thought.

Curious what the advantages are of installing the newer items. I’m fairly ignorant about anything newer than 2004!

On the 2004-2005 MY Prius, the odometer tops out at 299,999. That was addressed in the 2006-2009 refresh – the limit was removed.

Retrofitting a 2006-2009 CM together with the 2006-2009 light cluster allows your 2004 odometer to go past 299,999 miles.

Matt @Texas Hybrid Batteries can supply what you need and can answer any questions you might have to do this retrofit.
