I am being offered one for $1500 but I think we can meet at $900. It was used by a cab company.

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

Where in the us of a are you located:whistle:?

At that mileage, I wouldn’t go higher than $900 as there are expensive repairs due soon;).

If you are the DIY type, this should be a cheap mode of transportation :).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Agreeing with @bisco here. Generally speaking non-DIYers shouldn't drive cars past 300k miles, unless they're willing to take the risk of having to total it or put in a decent amount of money into repairing it.

DIY? Should last until the rust takes it, if you can replace everything on it eventually. Unlike the earlier Honda hybrids though, a Prius requires a hybrid battery to function, which costs $2500......way to much to put into a $900 car. Replacing the battery at this point would by folly unless you're a high mileage car enthusiast. But for $900, if the battery functions well, go with it and see if you can get it to last more than a year or two -- not trying to be pessimistic, hopefully it lasts much longer, but you can't ignore a large probability. But it's $900. Not like you'd be spending $9k on a 440k mile car anyway.

If it runs, $900 is the salvaged value. Even if you change your mind later, you should still be able to get $900

I am in Oregon and the car runs fine. I just test drove it but forgot to check the battery didn’t realize there was a way?

If you have an OBD2 code reader (very inexpensive) you can use a free app like Dr. Prius and get an overall state of the HV battery health.

If it drives it’s probably worth 900. Regular or Salvage title?

So my friend is selling me his old 2008 prius engine with 90k for $350, there is a company that reconditions batteries with a 1 year warranty for $500

So in total NOT counting the labor, 1,750 should be okay for a prius with a body thats seen 440k miles?

    .....!!!!

That’s some amazing mileage on that Prius. Does anyone know what the absolute mileage record is for a 2nd Gen Prius?

How much rust is on it? A 500 dollar rebuilt battery is a bad purchase. Pony up and get 2K1toasters if you need to.

A car that has 440k miles, used by a cab company, will need much more than an engine and a reconditioned battery. If you like the challenge, I'd say go for it. But it most likely will cause you a lot of headaches and a small fortune to keep it running

He doesn't list his location, the first thing I would looks at is rust, then overall condition of paint and interior. Everything else can be fixed. it wouldn't be worth much for resale.

I live in Oregon and I inspected the car well I think. Didn’t find rust. I will go today to check the battery health. The car drives well I tested drove it and it runs pretty well. No engine problems.

Ultimately you’re right. I’ve never worked on a vehicle more than just changing the trans and engine but never actually repair them. But I don’t want to spend money buying this and that part either

I can't give any reasoning...or logic that makes sense.
But like standing in front of a Slot Machine, there is something that whispers to me to do it. Go ahead!

Just as long as you know the odds are against you....it might be fun.

Nah, there is another prius with better miles , it requires at least 2k worth of body repair, has too many dents but its drive worthy
