2019 Prius Midcycle Refresh Details

    That's right ..... yet charge-discharge also turns on ambient temperatures & thermal management - because ultimately a C-rate factor is designed to preserve capacity / longevity. You can foolishly charge/discharge at extreme rates, but the useful life will be significantly shortened. Ergo, the failure of Nissan Leaf with its pathetic (hot) air cool only. Capacity preservation on newer Leafs is accomplished by high rate DC QC charge throttling down - once users complete that first QC.

    Well, I took the time to review the pages and do a tad bit of light research. To my eye, the 2019 "refresh" isn't bad, nor is it anything exciting. I'm perfectly happy with my two week-old 2018 and don't feel the least bit of buy's remorse. I do wish I could "unsee" ("unread"?) the characterization of "white porcelain toilet seat" for the wheel. Now I'm going to recognize it as such..... Thanks... :mad: ;) More seriously, my upper dash has the near-white expanse, which concerns me as a glare risk, but it's no show-stopper. Toyota could have done a better makeover, but it was hardly "necessary," and the whole line of Gen-4s are great cars IMO.

    I have been waiting for this to arrive everybody reviewing the 2019 Prius stated it was to arrive January 2019 so far I have not heard an exact date. However, I was looking at Consumer Reports and notice that the 2018 Prius was given an average reliability rating. This is unusual compared to the previous years. Was there some issues with the 2018 model year that I should watch out for in the 2019 model year?

    from everything I've read on the 2019, you can't get an AWD version with a sunroof (n)

    Stranger to me that you have to take a package to downgrade to 15" rims on an XLE or Limited. What will that package be? Seriously though, one of the things that swayed me back to a Gen IV was the ability to get Leather(ette) and a sunroof without a forced upgrade to 17" (or larger) rims like the Insight, Accord Hybrid, Camry Hybrid...

    Worse yet is the ~ $4,000 hybrid premium over comparable gas trim levels. I seriously almost went Accord EX-L on principle.

    This is what I've been the most annoyed about. No one knows anything about a release date anywhere, including Toyota corporate. Why would you release an awd vehicle, great for snow driving....in the spring!?

    I think Toyota manages the actual vehicle weight between different trims not so much for gas savings, but so they can all claim similar MPGs under the bizarre rules of the EPA.

    They game the system.

    Very plausible, and to me, very frustrating and irritating. It's as if when you go shopping for a Toyota or Honda, the options are straight-jacketed within the various "levels" that they offer, and if you don't like the way they mix and assign them, too bad. And it always seems that as you zero in on how you want the car, there's always one item missing, or one present you don't want to pay for.

    Some irony here for me. Honda has actually lost two car purchases, from me, because of how they set up the EX models. Why? I wanted the EX-level of stuff, but all EXs have sun roofs. I'm "only" six feet tall, but have a very long body and very short legs. I was almost not permitted to fly ejection seat aircraft, because my sitting height was right up at the safe limit. As mouth-watering as Accord EXs have been for me, the deal is broken in advance. Even in my wife's roomy, sun roof equipped Avalon, I have to run the seat all the way down to make it tolerable.

    Anyway, when you combine the sometimes predatory pricing with the severe rigidity of the package and level contents, it can get pretty infuriating. It would be nice if they'd just predict how many AWD buyers might want a sun roof and how many won't and build a mixture in that approximation. I can't imagine it would be that costly or difficult to do so.

    You are from Pensacola and fly ejection seat aircraft and yet you drive a Prius?

    Is that even allowed?

    Why yes, it is! A couple minor points. I flew jets in the Marines in my early career, though I'm back in the flying business now. It has been years since I strapped into a "seat" that can out-accelerate a Corvette (at least briefly...).

    More seriously, I actually love the turbine-like performance of our "CVT" Toyota Hybrids. I never felt my EA-6 "shift gears"... My Prius can't do 550 kts (over 630 mph, low altitude), but it also doesn't typically burn over 100 lbs of fuel per minute! I once did some rough calculations that revealed that a typical 2.5 hour mission in the Prowler would use approximately the same amount of fuel as the Civic I was driving at the time used in 150,000 miles. The engines were straight turbojets -- not turbofans (like most modern jet aircraft). Thirst. Real Thirst.

    During my last stretch of active duty (2003-2007, I retired from the USMC reserve in 2013), I got promoted to Colonel, and got to move up to the "privileged" (you may laugh at that -- I do) section of the parking garage. Most notable: there were several of us with Priuses! Go figure!
