Prime Long Work Commute MPG?

I use that nearly-useless 11 inch screen almost every single day. As I've said before, it's actually better than Google Maps in some ways, not the least of which is that I don't have to mount my phone and squint to see its tiny (by comparison) 5.1" screen.

 

Sounds like you need a bigger phone. Squinting is hard on your eyes.

 

My daily work commute is 110 miles round trip. Going to work gives me around 180+ mpg since mostly downhill with elevation change of 1500 ft. Going back home gives me around 70 mpg which is mostly uphill.
Good thing is I can charge nearby my work so it gives me another 25 EV miles.
Before when I was using my Honda Fit (33-34 mpg), I need to get gas twice a week, now with Prime I get gas twice a month.
Plus you get free HOV lane. I am really happy that I bought this car.

 

Where can I get an 11" phone that fits in my pocket and mounts itself to my car?

 

I'm looking for a car without a screen, any size, guess that's not on any more.

 

I'm with you on that. Infotainment system is the least used feature of any cars I have owned. Does Prius Base model come with touch screen now? My 2015 Gen3 Two did not.

All the 4th gen have screens. Third gen in Canada, from 2012 onward I believe, all have screens. I really think this is a ploy: dump more and more controls onto a touch screen, discontinue manual/tactile controls, ones that are designed so you can keep your eyes on the road. When the onscreen controls are also "nested", requiring you to drill down through a menu tree for access, it's completely nuts, my 2 cents.

 

Yes, my 2015 Gen3 did have a small monochrome screen for a back-up camera, but it was not touch screen. I can't remember if it was used for something else. for it had no navigation system. I never paid much attention to that screen but if it was used for anything other than rereview camera, the information displayed there was minimal IIRC. I think in the US, the back-up camera is now required, so there has to be some type of display for that.

BTW, my son just bought used 2015 HONDA CRZ without NAV. It has no screen other than very simple 1 line digital display panel for the audio, clock and such. It has embedded screen inside of rearview mirror for the back-up camera. Also, all the system indicator, gauges, and multi-informational display are right in front of the steering wheel. I really like that compact display.

 

This is a Fit cabin heater control: 100% tactile, ergonomic buttons, that you can adjust without taking eyes off the road. At least on the lower models: the top end gets a touch screen...

 

Similar with CRZ. A large dial and well lit tactile buttons. You can operate this with a fat gloved hand, no problem.

 

Totally agree. That's one of the reasons my wife wants the lowest trim of Hybrid Camry. There seems to be at least a few "old school" controls left on that model (unlike the higher trims). Plus it has a Li battery versus NiMh on the higher models (how does this even make sense?).

FWIW she cares 10x more about having "regular" controls versus what type of battery is in the hybrid. I'm more the other way around

 

Yup. I just did Anaheim to Palmdale today (Jan 26, 2019), 188 miles round trip, only had initial charge on my Prime; got 79.4 miles/gal according to the Entune Eco app. Of course this has kicked our noble, Le PrimeSnail off the "chart", damn! I went 8,149 miles since my last fillup!! I just love my Prime!!

Just a suggestion. One thing I do (I have a 160 mile round trip commute) is once a week I stay at a hotel near work, usually Thursday night. I have tons of points from work travel and credit cards. It saves my back, saves 160 miles, and gives me an quiet evening to chill, watch movies, read, and sleep in. I usually bring my 110V cable and charge at the hotel.

In a 10-15 mile radius around your office, there is bound to be a low-points option between Hilton (20k points is low), IHG(10-15k) and Marriott (7.5.12.5k).

 

When I first moved out here I was staying in Spanos Park West on the north side of Stockton. The landlord would go from there to San Jose everyday and I thought that was crazy.

When I met my now wife I moved off of Pocket in Sac and went to Lathrop everyday which was 53 miles one way.

You got us all beat as that is a tough commute. Hitting both Stockton and Bay Area commute traffic.

The prime will serve you well if you decide to go that route.

probably can't fit into your pocket... but someone at some point is going to stick one over the 11".

me... I like the 11" display, I haven't had any issues at all with the nav. I've had cases with accidents where it did a better job of rerouting me around shut down highways than Waze has. I couldn't care less about the apps, (although the weather display is sometimes nice especially when you live in tornado alley).

 

For pure HV mode, you should easily get ~55mpg given. BTW, I will drive from Folsom (not far away from Elk Grove) to San Jose airport Friday and go back, and I would only charge at home. I should give you accurate number soon.
