Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

I did the same, only I used the plastic fittings from the plumbing section of the hardware store. I've switched to black ATF line from the auto parts store. The fit is so snug that I don't have a need for clamps on any of the connections -- not at the engine or OCC.

@Mendel Leisk : Good idea about reducing the OD by turning in a drill!

 

Yeah you can go too far, blunting the brass barb splicers. They have these wicked sharp edges. But the OD's just about right with them, so you really just want to blunt that sharp edge, not reduce it too much.

I have a mighty vac, was thinking next time I have the air box off, I should plug one end hose (of the whole contraption, everything between PCV valve and intake manifold spigot), and apply suction and/or pressure at the other end, and see how air tight it is. Good way to check for loose connection, that might be creating slight vacuum leak.

 

Was waiting for a nice day to install the OCC , and finally got it installed today , it was around 50 degrees , and I wanted to get it done , not as easy I was hoping for , but its in . I installed it right next to the coolant for the invertor , there is a bracket there with 2 holes in it , had to take the bolts off the coolant tank so I could move it some , just to tighten down the bracket for the OCC. I took the air box off , to get the hose off thats on the manifold , then went underneath the car to get the hose off the PVC valve , took the little hose inside , cut it in half with a razor knife , then used a hair dryer to heat up the ends and slide the 3/8 in barb fitting into the hose , connected the 3/8 reinforced hose and went back out and had to play around some to fish the hose through and line everything up , a little pain , but its done and Im glad I have it installed . Now I wait and see how much oil it collects. Thanks to all that posted tips on how to do this , the Nuts About Bolts video was very helpful, Thanks again Gregg

Just an update since installing the oil catch can 1 year ago in my 2011 .
Some very cold temps here in the north east over the past few days . I was regestering -3 on Monday morning (yes , negative ! ) . Was a little nervous to start up the Prius as this is exactly the temp range that my (most) Prius would get the dreaded cold soak death knocking .
Well I am happy to report that ever since the oil catch can install , I have had NO instances of cold knocking , NONE ! Even in -3 degree temps , the Prius fired right up nice and quiet !
Just posting a follow up ...... that the oil catch can is doing its job !

So after a week and 130mi my catch can is completely dry. Just smells of exhaust and gas. I presume that's great right?

 

~300 kms post install I had a tablespoon or two of oil. What your oil catch can? Does it have internal baffles, mesh? Do you have any pictures of the install?

 

It's a ruien OCC without scotchbrite mesh. Stock hose cut in half, 3/8 barb adapters used and 3/8 fuel hoses routed to the occ mounted with danlatu bracket. Rather standard install.
Pcv valve was replaced with a new one, I verified that there is airflow. Since the occ smells like exhaust gasses I assume there is a flow. OCC is not oily however. I'm in sofl if that matters.

Edit: just verified that all connections are intact and they are.

My Prius hasn't been requested to do smog yet, but when I do, the gas station next to my office will hook it up

 

My parents’ ‘12 had one. I can’t remember if he even opened the hood. But just connected something to the OBD-2 port. I guess the next question is does this throw some detectable code?

 

No code of any kind from the oil catch can and hoses, unless somehow there is a vacuum loss so bad that it is creating drivability problems, or you forgot to plug something back in LOL If it drives and runs good, there shouldn't be any malfunction indicator lights or trouble codes from OCC install.

 

When I got my smog done in December of 2017, the hood was opened and the gas door was opened. Then the diagnostics were checked.

But it was a cursory look as we were swapping stories about our Prii .

But it is part of the inspection to look under the hood, so the potential for scrutiny exists.
