So I ordered a smoked third brake light assembly from iJDMTOY that plugs directly into the stock plug from the old assembly, except there is additional red wire on the smoked assembly that is supposed to be used to power an LED bar as a running light. I really like the look of the bar, however, I don't want to use it as a running light, but rather have it light up with the rest of the LEDs as I press on the brake. How could I connect the extra red wire to achieve this? I also took some photos of the stock plug, it has a blue wire and a white wire with a black stripe. It's hard to see because the plug only comes out of the spoiler by an inch or so.
It looks like you have exactly two wires to choose from. Since they both carry the circuit when the brakes go on,I'm going to guess that tapping into either wire will do the job for you. AmIright?
"There is no modification required, simply unbolt the original 3rd brake lamp and directly replace back with this JDM one. The Toyota JDM 3rd brake also comes with an optional wire which you can leave it alone, or you can also choose to connect it to your stock taillamp's positive and let your JDM 3rd brake function as rear fog light or tail running light."
The lights came in today, plugging them in directly just lights up the individual LEDs not the bar. I tried stripping some of the red wire then sticking it in the stock plug before plugging it in and neither side worked. My electrical knowledge is very limited if it wasn’t obvious already. Anyone know how I can connect this wire to be a brake light and NOT a running light?
No, the stock plug has a blue wire and a white wire with a black stripe. The new tail lamp has a direct fit plug plus an extra red wire. No black wires.
