We just took our new "06" on a road trip to the wifes new work location. Total round trip distance was 74 miles. We now have a total of 198 miles on the car. The trip is from Camarillo to Malibu, in CA. B) Majority winds along hwy 1, winding along the coast. We averaged 50.1 mpg !! !! !! The car isn't even started to break in. I wonder what it will do after we get a few thousand miles under her belt?!!??!!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(sluggo42 @ Aug 18 2006, 07:07 PM) </div> Congrats! 50.1 right out of the chute is pretty darned good! Keep us posted on how you're doing.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(sluggo42 @ Aug 18 2006, 04:07 PM) </div> That is the type of driving that is most conducive to good mileage. Moderate speeds with plenty of opportunity to coast and glide and thus recycle spent energy.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(IsrAmeriPrius @ Aug 18 2006, 08:14 PM) </div> And flat. You can't get any flatter than PCH.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Dragonfly @ Aug 18 2006, 06:20 PM) </div> PCH is far from flat between Oxnard/Camarillo and Malibu. It has plenty of gentle rolling hills, which my Prius loves and in turn rewards me with the best mileage I have ever gotten in the car.
Wow!! Great feeling!! I remember how my heart sank when I only got 31 mpg on my first tank.... Then I realized I was driving in mpg enemy territory...lots of hills, many VERY short trips, tires under pressured, AC blasting... Now, on my second tank, I am over 40 and still doing these short trips, but bunching errands, tire pressures up, briskly climbing my hills, using coasting to regen, pulse and glide occasionally when SOC is at good level....so, now... on a day with same number of short errands, I am able to keep myself just above 40 mpg....higher with a bit longer trip...but I am still thrilled! If I remain in the 40s with my kind of driving, I'll be happy, but do admit I find myself wanting to drive places I don't need to go just to up my mpg....Someone said that means I really am a Prius owner!! terri
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(ZenCruiser @ Aug 18 2006, 09:35 PM) </div> What kind of mileage are you getting? I need a target number for the wife to shoot for, altho she is beginning to think I'm turning anal about this whole Prius thing. She says I've fallen over the edge !
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(sluggo42 @ Aug 19 2006, 06:17 PM) </div> You HAVE fallen over the edge, that's why you're on PriusChat ! Tell her about the lady in Japan who's gotten 112 MPG (equivalent) in her regular driving. Most of the rest of us get from 45 to 55 MPG in regular driving, but your milage may vary.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(sluggo42 @ Aug 18 2006, 07:07 PM) </div> It is all about psi. I was getting mid 40's on my 3 week old Prius. Finally got around to checking the tire pressure - all 4 were at 30.5 Went to 41 front and 39 rear (compromising a smidge from the 42/40 you see on this site). MPG went to 50+ highway and hitting 60's in spots on secondary roads. I am also wondering if over inflated tires may be contributing to everyone's bitching about the little car's handling. I have yet to notice any scary wandering.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Actual Mileage @ Aug 20 2006, 04:43 PM) </div> WoW, that is a significant gain. I now wonder if the people who have upgraded to better handling tires have suffered a significant loss??
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(sluggo42 @ Aug 20 2006, 06:21 PM) </div> I am cheaper than dirt - so I am planning on driving the OEMs into the ground. I am curious about snows - it is pretty much obligatory up here - but I haven't found anyone that has put them on their Prius. After a weekend of rain - I am ordering the window vent protectors - you cannot even crack the driver's window withoout water streaming in. Whatever happened to rain gutters?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Dragonfly @ Aug 18 2006, 09:20 PM) </div> You've obviously never driven along the Atlantic coast in Florida (think A1A)...
