    Now only one level with temp spare: LE (FWD).

    Mildly interesting too, the "Spare" feature, and no levels have it:

    A rough edit, for round the world markets with full-size spare? Just the expression "Temporary" seem a little first draft too.

    There's mention of 15" wheels without wheel covers: that sounds interesting.

    That's true. Up here, every level but the top level with the "Advanced Package" has a spare.

    I guess the AWD models (if available) will for sure not have spare, for technical reasons. Other'n that, who knows.

    Meh, next gen, or never.

    Does anyone know why the NiMH battery for the AWD version is 6.8 amp-hour, while the Li-Ion battery in the FWD version is 3.6 amp-hour? Considering that an amp-hour is an amp-hour, regardless of battery type, does this mean that the AWD version will have a longer electric-only range compared to the FWD 2019 Prius?

    XLE models with the Premium Convenience Package will get the alloys from the European PHV - that is the two-tone brushed/painted alloy.

    It can be one of two thing or both:
    - Rated power. Battery in Prius assists at around 8 kW in normal driving and 20+ kW at full power. Li-ion may be developed so it's smaller and lighter but it still manages to output enough power.
    - Usable SOC, li-ion may have more usable SOC, for NiMh I know it's used only from 40%-80%, that is only 40% of rated 6.8 Amps. For li-ion to get the same usable capacitiy it would have to be used 75% of SOC, so maybe from 10% to 85%.

    One other thing, why NiMh in AWD version, maybe the cold weather performance is better with NiMh chemistry and AWD option is primarily thought to be a "snowy" version.

    That is exactly the reason that Toyota has stated repeatedly with regard to AWD-e in the 2019 Prius.

    so many prius are sold in snow country, and have been forever. glad i haven't had any trouble with my li-on

    The NiMH battery has always been larger than the lithium ion battery, both in size and in actual capacity in amp hours, ever since 2016.

    The reason is because the NiMH battery range (if I remember correctly the exact numbers) 30% of it's charge between 0 and 8 bars, leaving the upper and lower charge levels never achieved, and the lithium ion uses 70% of it's charge between 0 and 8 bars.

    This is because a lithium ion battery can safely use it's full power at higher and lower charges than NiMH without deteriorating the battery long term.

    The lithium ion is smaller(in capacity) because it can (without risk of fire or damage)pull a larger discharge current at low battery percentage, and can receive a higher current at higher charges than NIMH, meaning it doesn’t have to be as large.

    For a full hybrid you really want the smallest battery weight possible that can still deliver necessary current surges. The lithium ion can do that with a battery that has less power overall. Having a battery with larger capacity than necessary is a detriment, because whatever you use needs to be charged back from the engine, with the associated conversion losses, and the added weight.


    Most people think the lithium ion battery is smaller because it is more power dense and that it has the same capacity as NIMH in the Prius.

    It is more power dense, but it’s actually so much smaller that it has less energy.

    I would just point out that there are many different designs of Li-ion, Prius battery is extremely large for the small capacity compared to other EV batteries. There is just no way you could use for eg. Tesla li-ion cells and use them in Prius, because they are rarely used over 1 C, where Prius battery must cope with 10 C in normal driving conditions.

    IMO it came down to usable SOC and longevity at that SOC.

    Are you talking about centigrade degrees? Ambient temperatures? Or internal to the battery temperature? Even ambient temperatures will range much higher than 10C, and internal to the battery maybe 40~50C.

    C-rate is charge or discharge rate relative to the capacity of the battery. A 1 C rate (in units of per hour) is what is needed to charge or discharge a battery in 1 hour. A 10 C rate would be 10 times greater, a 0.1 C rate is 10 times smaller.
