When I reverse a regular clunking noise can be heard from the back of the car. I did a friction emergency stop in neutral and that resolved the problem but only for a short while. Any thoughts? Seized calliper perhaps? Already checked the tyres for screws etc. Thanks.
Have you checked for loose items inside the car. Like the storage bin under the aft floor or left side covered compartment? iPhone X ?
Since the OP is suspecting the rear brakes, I suggest jacking up the rear of the car. Spin each rear tire by hand to see if the noise can be produced. Maybe that would provide a further clue about the source of the noise.
On my 2015 with disc brakes, I hear a clunking noise when I brake in reverse. I addressed this with the dealer and their foreman. Their diagnosis is it's a normal brake pad shifting noise and not something needing repair. Strange thing is my 2010 doesn't make this noise. Not sure if you have disc brakes or drum brakes though. In the USA, gen 2 cars would have drum brakes
You don't mention miles but since its a 2005 I bet its got 200+. Since friction stop seemed to fix it get a flashlight and look at all the disc brake rotors through the wheel slots. See how bad they are. Should be perfectly smooth if they have deep lines in them or gouge lines or bad corrosion there toast and in the am will make quite a racket. The disc brakes are very weird on this car. They corrode quickly overnight. If the car lives outside you may want to think about getting cheap ebay wheel covers. Take a picture of the rotor and post it.

Merry old England. That car needs a raincoat. If I lived in that environment with this car I would buy slip on vinyl wheel covers there cheap on ebay. It will really help.
It's the salt they put on the roads in winter that really doesn't help. Most people use summer tires all year so they put a lot of grit down to keep the roads moving. The whole underside of the car has a lot of surface rust.
How many miles? If rusted into oblivion make sure you factor that in to any big $$$ repairs. It may be too far gone corrosion wise. Seen alot of those on here. Send some more pics. Too bad as its easily mitigated.
