Swapping in a Gen 4 Prius' 2ZR Engine into the Prius v

    Thanks. Yeah it just seems like a lot of grief dealing with EGR and exhaust while the engine's still in. I've taken the EGR off and what a pain.

    Appreciate that I keep firing questions at ragingfit and you keep fielding them. (y)

    I’ve been off work the last couple of days. Been fielding DM’s from another member asking the same or similar questions about the swap. And it looks like a friend of mine here locally is getting ready to do this swap for himself. So the questions are being asked from all directions.

    The worst part of removing the EGR is that bottom bolt on the cooler. A deep socket, plus a one inch extension plus a swivel socket plus a longer extension(8-10 inch) is how I got mine off. Then I slipped a small magnet into the socket to start the nut back on.

    And yet another question: I gather it was only due to the recipient car (in the video) being a v that the transaxle damper swap was not enough, that he had to go to swapping the whole flywheel?

    I got the sense he was not expecting that complication, and that was because his previous swap was Prius/Prius, and damper swap was all that was needed in that case.

    For one scary moment I thought he'd hit an impasse, that it was not going to work, full-stop. Was a relief to see the solution.

    The damper and flywheel are the same on the V and the Gen 3. The Gen 4 damper and flywheel are different. To go from Gen 4 to Gen 3/V, you have to use the 3/V damper and flywheel

    Yeah I've been there. The sandpounder for me, watching the video: you don't need to remove the lower stud, just the nut off the end of it. Which is hard enough, lol. But you can leave the stud on, still get the cooler off, if everything else is removed.

    Again yeah, if that can be left until after the engine's out, so much easier.

    And still very tantalizing: could the fourth gen EGR somehow be used...

    The transaxle has a couple of alignment pins, the input shaft is splined and chamfered so it goes back together blind. Of course as with anything, if you have to force it you're going to break it. I always wiggle engines or transmissions to get them to seat before I put the screws to them.

    Curious why you chose to retrofit the V with the gen 4 motor? Did you have massive failure in the gen 3 prius v? what happened?

    In one of the main series too, he shows the condition of the intakes, severely carbonned up. Just my 2 cents: he ran the engine with EGR disconnected for maybe 50K miles, that might have taken a toll, overheating.

    I have a Black 2012 Prius v that I bought with 99,000 miles on it. I drove it for about a month and it burned all the oil. Not like my previous 6) Prius's. (Service records indicate it was already burning oil at 87,000 miles) Then it started to run terribly. I replaced the spark plugs and the PCV and it was good for about 10,000 miles, except the oil burning, then terrible again. I unplugged the EGR and replaced the spark plugs again and it was good, but still burning oil. I took it to the dealer for the EGR recall and they refused to replace the EGR. If anyone had a bad EGR it was me! What jerks! Then at about 190,000 miles it started using water. I needed about 5 gallons of water to get home from work (45 miles). I tried that Barrs Leaks for head gaskets and it worked, and killed my catalytic converter. So yeah, and boo!
    I bought another Prius v (the Gray v Five) to replace the black one.
    Now I could fix the black one.
    I decided that the oil rings were to blame for the oil burning, so replacing the head gasket would not make me happy, I would have to re-ring it. I used a YouTube video from Phoenix and Dad

    as a starting place. Got much more info from PriusChat posters, specifically Danlatu.
    I followed his procedure and my rebuilt engine ran for about 5 miles. The oil pump had lost it's prime in the rebuild and I should have packed it with vaseline or primed it somehow but it's driven by the crank. Anyway, one blown engine later I started looking for a replacement engine. I knew the 2016 engine was the same 2ZRFXE engine with better rings but no one could say it would work, then CNC97 tried it. It was the same engine except some minor changes, motor mount, Flywheel, hose connections, etc. He used the 2016 engine with the third gen head with no problems. I knew I could do it too. I ordered my new engine, examined the systems on the new engine and compared the old. It was a complete success, so I video taped the second swap on the gray v five.

    And I have crossed over the 219k, or 5500 mile since the Frankenstein’s monster/jigsaw puzzle assembly having added 0 antifreeze and having changed the oil at 2200 miles. No oil consumption to note, and the oil looks as clean as the day I poured it in.

    I am going to do an oil analysis on my next change. Probably going to hit 5k on the oil in February.

    I've put about 9,000 miles on my Gray 2012 Prius v and changed the oil 2,000 miles ago. No oil loss or burning, No issues at all!
    I parked my Black 2012 Prius v because the catalytic converter is bad now. Thanks Barrs Leaks! But it purrs like a kitten.

    I did a search on car-part.com. Gen 3 engines in my area still have a $500-$600 premium over the Gen 4.

    Great work! Interestingly, my 2012 Prius v (wagon) has 143K on it an doesn't burn a noticeable amount oil....and I'm pretty sure the previous owner ran the vehicle hard ( see link in signature ). I purchased it with about 120K on the clock. Did I win the lottery? (y) I was 'expecting' at least some oil consumpotion when I bought it...but I'm not complaining.

    BTW - our 2010 liftback does consume a modest amount of oil.

    I guess the moral of the story is that buying a used Prius can be a scary proposition due to the oil consumption issue.
