The original techstream OBD2 reader (mongoose) costs many hundreds of dollars... Hacked software and devices from China makes it easy to get past that, but you still have to get past that...

The ones I have seen came with the cable and software...
And it will be worth it. It was worth it just to turn off that stupid back up beep!

It should... As I said before, get familiar/do reading about some of the challenges people face setting them up.

I have heard that noise before. That’s a dead cylinder. Engine disassembly or replacement is going to be required. This was how mine ran with a bent valve on #1 cylinder.

In reverse the engine's just idling IIRC, that maybe ties in?

@cnc97's had his engine out more times than he can count one hand, if I'm not mistaken? (y)(y)(y)(y)

    I thought it was 4 times ;).

But the number of appendages mAy determine if you need an additional hand or not (y).

I was going to upload my video, but it’s too long. I may put it on my YouTube and link to it later.

Hello i am from the netherlands. Yesterday i was talking with a toyota mechanic.. it is the head gasket who is leaking.. so now maybi your valve is bent...

You have to replace your engine... you can drive the car in mechanic mode.. thats only driving with patrol... not electric mode... do you know how to put in mechanic mode?0

Special modes are really only for maintenance, not driving, might damage the transaxle, more damage than you currently have. I would drive it just the minimum, or park it and find alternatives till a replacement engine is available.

Hello experts, just experienced same issue with my prius yesterday. I started my prius after a week of inactivity. On very first start same noise observed from engine, i immediately put the car in reverse and with a light jerk the nose disappeared. Thanks God the nose didn't appear after that. In my opinion such noise appear due to some incomplete mechanical action inside the transaxle.
If such noise is due to engine then it wouldn't go away even in reverse, so my suggestion is that instead of focusing on engine for noise, firstly transaxle may be investigated. I'm sure all prius owners know that transaxle fluid must be replaced after a certain mileage (may be 50000 miles or so but not sure).

I noticed the original owner was obcessed about the 20 w 30 oil. While not ideal it won't ruin your high mileage engine if ran for a short time. Four cylinder engines don't run well with a dead cylinder. You have fairly high mileage on the engine and a cylinder leak down test will help determine the health of the engine and it sounds like it is already an oil burner. How often do you check your oil?

See post #6, 1st sentence will let you know transaxle is out of the equation.

You’re engine is f#%ked (basically). It may be a dead cylinder because of the EGR read top comments if that doesn’t fixing it then your misfires are due to a major break down mine was a piston 4 ring hope yours is a little better

I would like to update everyone about this mystery noise. The initial cause of my problem was that my mother ran low on oil and didn’t do anything when the light came on. Eventually it lost power and she pulled over. Then it was too late it had already ruined a piston ring. At the mileage the engine is at (170k) it would be a waste to rebuild. Still looking for an engine if someone knows someone that’s selling one I have not been able to locate one since. My car has just been at a shop sitting there. If you hear this noise to head straight to the junk yard to find an engine it may be your EGR system because it will cause a misfire. I am still curious as why the engine would run fine in reverse?
