0W-40 oil, is it time?

Just for info: the 2015 model year has revised pistons and rings (2014 model year has revised pistons only). There is also a service bulletin (attached) for excessive oil consumption, and the fix is to replace pistons/rings with the revised versions.

TSB ...168 is oil consumption test, and ,,,169 is the replacement procedure.

 

new feature a year or two back. times out after so many hours. no one knows why. you can report your post and ask a mod to change it.

 

Keeps the mod's gainfully employed. I think they work for free though?

Mobil1 0W-40 is a little different than Toyota's. It has a lower pour point, higher flash point but is 50% thicker at 100*C. It should do great in high mileage vehicles and hot climates.

I run 40 weight on the my g2 and the engine loves it. No mpg hit really.

I have been using a high performance oil with a ZDDP package for about 6 years now. No issues at all with the Cat. And it really helps with engine wear. It significantly reduces the solid lifter noise in the engine.

 

Thank you for sharing your location in your profile. You are also located in one of the warmer parts of the country. I want to assume that is not straight 40 weight oil, that you are using multi-weight of some sort, 0W-40 or 5W-40 maybe? Would you still advise what you are using in colder locations in the northern parts of the country? Thanks for sharing what has worked for you, (sort of. You did not specify what oil nor additive).

Living in Florida I do forget the colder climates which may be a concern in the really cold areas of our country. 20 weight is a better bet if your in frigid areas.

I use 5-30 Redline Motor oil its the only oil product I have ever used where you can hear and feel a difference in the engine especially quieting down the solid lifter Atkinson motor. It touts a 30 weight oil that's actually a 40 weight viscosity at operating temperature and has a ZDDP package also. 100% esther base stock. Its a really strange feeling oil between your finger tips its feels like liquid plastic.

I used to own Corvettes so was in Corvette forum's and everyone ran this stuff. Then I was into Nissans and the Fresh Alloy forum and everyone ran there trans fluid and motor oil especially the turbo 240SX which is a rocket on wheels. Its highly regarded in Bimmer forums and WRX forums.

Its an awesome motor oil. You should try it. Been running it for many years in all my cars. I also run Redline D6 trans oil for 11 years now and 130000 miles. Many posters on this site use it too. Excellent.

They make great products. It blows away Mobil 1 no comparison. Google redline oil.

Agree, if your engine burns almost no oil, shouldn't be a problem. If your engine does burn some oil, ZDDP will foul the cat more quickly. In fact, this is the main reason why modern oil has less ZDDP than in the past. Reference:

Redline 0w-20 is currently in my crankcase. It's at 9,000 miles, getting darker but not as dark as mobil 1 0w-20 AFE @ 5,000 miles which was 2 oil changes ago. 95% hwy miles, maybe able to get away with 12,000 mile OCI w/current mobil 15,000 mi filter but might not wait that long.

 

If and until it does, I would just remain staying the course.
Why make any change if you have no symptoms of a problem?
