Transmission removal without engine?

    Hello again. Long story short, I have to remove the transmission from a 2012 Prius Plug-in. Is there any way to do this without removing the engine as well? I've taken both out, but I never tried to just get the transmission out.

    The reason I am doing this is, the engine was replaced. The entire thing was put back together. After about 60 miles, there is now a heavy 'rattle' when the thing is in park. When in drive/reverse whether stopped or moving, as long as torque is being put against it, it will not make the noise. It also does not seem to make the noise in EV mode. Anyone have any ideas on the situation? I'm suspecting the torque damper/limiter (clutch-looking disk in there). Are there any 'access covers' to see in there? I can't recall. Thanks!

    When you're underneath there's a black plastic cover of some sort, in the vicinity. I've noticed it when doing oil changes; it's somewhat loose, not sealing anything, and I'd suspect it could be popped out if you push in the right place. Not sure of it's purpose, but maybe for inspection.

    I haven't Techstream'd it, but I think so. And the engine was just replaced with another used engine, so sorta irrelevant. The original engine had a rod put through the block.

    If it was me, I would just pull the engine back out. Less hassle then trying to drop the trans out the bottom.

    I would double check for codes. Misfiring will cause the engine/trans to make a horrible racket. But it might be one of the bolts has backed out of the damper cover, or a loose flywheel bolt.

    Please try unplugging the EGR. I know it sounds like I'm barking up the wrong tree but I spent a few years tracking down the cause of my rattle and it was the EGR. The EGR gets in a somewhat open position and the engine is choked with exhaust. It starts to rattle and chug at slow speeds or parked if the engine is running. The electric side of things keeps the Prius running even when it's missing badly.
    The transmission is extremely robust, although the drive plate does go bad occasionally.
    The transmission is static when parked unless the engine is running. In EV mode the transmission is employed but not the engine.
    Unplug the EGR and test it out. If that fixes your problem, replace the EGR. This is not the same as cleaning the EGR. FYI - There was a recall on the EGR.

    Maybe someone can make heads-or-tails of the attachment, the Repair Manual's EGR troubleshooting procedure. It's over my head, and requires Techstream. It's predicated by the car showing a code (P0401).

    It also mentions taking readings from the MAP sensor. That sensor is in the intake manifold, directly below the throttle body. If you haven't got an effective oil-catch-can installed that sensor is pretty much swimming in oil. Maybe it's still functional thus, not sure.

    Try checking the exhaust shield, and the two long header bolts that lead to your Catalytic converter. Also check the engine mounts too.
