Help choosing new tires for my v 3.

you can go on the michelin website, and ask for the closest thing to the hydro edge, then go on tire rack for reviews. all the best!

 

I live in the south, so I do not have winters, I moved from the west coast where rain is the challenge, so I have only hearsay advice.

These are of course great winter tires, but may be year round tires if you do not have hot summers. Do you have space to store tires and swap twice a year?

You might take a look at the General Altimax RT43. They're all season and get really good reviews in the snow. My daughter up in Madison has a set on her Camry and I have them on my v a little downstate from you. We're happy.

It probably depends on what tire dealers you have locally. We have a Goodyear dealer about a mile and a half from where we live that we've
done a lot of business with over the last 14 years, and there was a thread on the Gen II forum that recommended the Goodyear Assurance.
My wife was nervous in wet weather with her 2008 Gen II, so we popped for the all weather version. The good news was that she has
stated to multiple people that she never knew before in her life that she could fall in love with a set of tires. They are far stickier than the OEM's,
especially in wet weather, and she is vastly more comfortable. I've driven it in the rain when I couldn't even notice that it was raining. The bad news is that it cost us 5+ MPG, now down to about 40. Michelins are good tires also; do you have a local dealer that you have an ongoing relationship with?

 

There hasn't even been rumors of snow, here on the wet coast, but I put our Michelin X-Ice on maybe a couple of weeks ago. It's really not that much more expense: you're rotating 8 tires instead of 4, so both sets last longer. Maybe, as long your miles aren't so low that they "age out" first.

Obvious there's extra rim costs, and extra storage hassle. You can make the seasonal swaps your tire rotation, so no extra labour there.

Winter in Chicago, I'd definitely vote to get snow tires, and keep your regular tires going through the rest of the year, maybe another couple of years.

I believe there's a Camry steel rim that'll work?

One thing, if you can dodge TPMS on the snows, life will be a lot simpler. If you're forced to put them on, you can opt to just not initiate them every time.

 

I wonder if cloning IDs works well. Then no need to reprogram with each swap....

 

Correct on the Camry wheels, I have bought 2 used sets of Camary wheels with snow tires for my v. One 16" set and one 17" set, both work great. No TPMS. I pretend the TPMS icon on the dash is a picture of a snow tire. Other than storing tires and rims, the extra set of mounted snow tires is the way to go.

As an aside, I just put 4 new Antares all season tires from Walmart on the v a few days ago. So far, they are much better than the 3/4 worn Michelins that were on it. One of the Michelin's had a broken belt, so they had to go. I was planning to replace them anyway, and then wifey literally got stuck and had to back down multiple hills on busy main roads in downtown Jamestown NY with the ol' Michelins two weekends ago. We'll try the Antares tires for this winter, and if it get's sketchy, I'll throw on a set of Camry wheels with Blizzaks.

I was getting new (all-season) tires for our stock wheels, with the tpms sensors. The snow tires on separate rims are on, but driving to Costco with the stock wheels in the hatch, the tpms light went out. Hey I'll take it.

It was the smoothest install experience I've ever experienced at Costco btw. I was really pleasantly surprised. I arrived about 1/2 hour early, and I think was out of there within 45 minutes. Barely had time to go in and buy a few groceries lol. The tire guy had me back right up to load them back into the hatch.

One brilliant idea: I laced a rope through all four wheels, and cinched it tight to the D-rings at the back.

Just wanted to say that the original Yokohaha tires on my 2015 were getting quite worn after 35K miles, and were really noisy. After reading a lot about tires on this site, (THANKS!!!) I researched the General Altimax RT43 and though I really wanted Michelins, my budget said General. I got a mailer from my Toyota dealer about "buy 3 and get 1 for 1 dollar". Sounded good, and it turns out they were cheaper each (75 each) than WallyMart (83) and when you a figured in the 4th tire for a buck, even with the higher cost to mount and balance (110 total), it was cheaper. The final NET cost was just under 400. And...there is a 50 dollar rebate right now from General with a set of 4. Net...now 350. They seem to hold the road well and are quieter (the car itself is so noisy compared to many that it is hard to tell). Will report later on how they do in the Central Florida climate.
