I had mine replaced recently (see thread in the main forum on my Major Mishap)...the line item for the hatch was "only" around $3,500.

Awesome. I was just quoting what I was told, although mine didn't have damage to the hatch, so I had nothing to go by except for what the adjuster was telling me (and he may very well have been exaggerating). Good to know though, that hatch had me pretty worried.

How long did it take your replacement to come in? It took almost 2 months to get my car back from the body shop (back in Sept of last year). I was told they had to take the rear-quarter panel off the line and ship it to the US as there were none available, and it had to come over by slow-boat.

For me it was just over a month - the body parts were only part of the issue. The biggest delay was waiting for an ICS control module that got "fried" somehow by the impact, which had to be ground-shipped to WA (Toyota considered it a hazmat). Only took a couple hours to install once it showed up, though. Total repair cost came to about $18K.

You probably had all the repairs finished by now. But open the hatch and then open the cover at the back of the cargo floor where the charging cable is supposed to be stored. There are a couple "bumpers" in there that seem to protect the hybrid battery. The front and back part should be touching or nearly touching, but not crumpled or damaged. I don't think you'd have damage there without the steel energy absorbing bumper (under the plastic bumper) being damaged, but it's worth checking.

My wife and I had a similar accident. She was hit from behind and shoved the car into another car doing damage to the RR and RF. The 2018 Prime was two months old with 3,200 miles. The major issue we had with the repair was appraiser for the owner at fault would not approve "supplemental" parts. Without the approval, the Toyota body shop would not order the needed parts. The whole thing took 2 months to resolve. The rear hatch cost State Farm $3,700 and the LED light on the right front cost $1,800. Since the car was in an accident, the value of the car is less than what would be expected for that year and mileage. Because the car is new, there is a "diminished value" claim you can make but the insurance company, I am told, will fight you tooth and nail. Neither Toyota or my own insurance company would come to my aid. Apparently I have two years to put in a claim but there are companies on the Internet that will do most of the battle for you (for a fee).

i have obtained the services of a specialist who was referred to me and submitted the demand letter for the diminished value, plus loss of use and the cost of the diminished value appraisal... you are right, the insurance co (state farm) was useless in this regard...

waiting for the police dept's insurance to respond...

yeah... i was trying to deal with the insurance co... and figure out if i wanted it repainted again (paint doesn't match, it is darker)... and make the decision on paying $45o for the assessment, with no guarantee if i would receive anything in the end...

my understanding is that you have 2 years to file diminished value claims...

I got mine rear ended yesterday but it was not too bad. Whiplash/Shock is no fun at all!

The damage on mine seems to be the other's car license plate's bolt pinched/marked on my lower part (black panel) below the color bumper. The impact on the other car's bumper corner was cracked and seems to be more costly for repair.

I got a preliminary estimate of $600 from the body shop but awaiting for the tech to inspect the internal battery for additional estimate when it is in the shop.

I do have a concern regarding the lithium cell battery. I did immediately plugged it in at the dealership after towed there and seems to be charging fine and no error code in the dashboard.

I believe @nanobozho impact is greater than mine but did you ask the dealership to check? Will the cells dislocate or squeeze a bit? The body shop told me that they need to use the internal adapter for further investigation.

    Please advise.

If the total damage was $600 CDN worth of bumper and a license plate hole, your battery is fine. Taking the car apart to diagnose it is more of a risk because they don't have business being in there anyways.

I hope the battery is fine. The body shop told me they will use that OBD adapter and I doubt they will open the battery case to look at it. Assuming the OBD report can check everything, etc.

I'm really curious how they can read physical deformities through the OBDII port since there are no strain sensors or anything. If there was a short or broken wire or something of that nature, the car just wouldn't go vroom at all. It's one big series string of cells. Think old-school christmas lights. When one is dead, they're all dead. If they all work, then they are all working, yay!

If this "check" is free, then why not. If you are paying $$$ for it, then I would reconsider.

If my car was not a prime/PHEV with a lithium battery in the back, I would have settled it privately. I wouldn't take a chance to suffer later on that there was an issue since I have purchased the car. If it was leased, I would just get a new one after a few years.

Yes it is a free check as part of the insurance claim workflow. At least the side effect of dizziness/headache caused by the whiplash is giving me a painful process claim with the insurance company. Bottom line it was not my lucky day regardless to suffer this :(

Are all PHEV/BEV magnet to rear ended? There was a BMW i3 collision a day after mine and also close where I got hit.. I think the slowdown regen or ePedal with no Brake lights when used could be a major concern. Perhaps this needs to be changed. Just a thought.

This happened to us after we'd been sitting at a red light for at least a minute. Not a PHEV/BEV. Just stupid drivers.

I agree, many tail chasing drivers and crazy drivers :(

This is my first Prius in my life and I find many drivers tail me more often but I was already at 115km/hr on HOV or am I driving too slow :(

My wife had some whiplash, probably because she didn't hear my warning and get her head against the headrest like I did. I was fine.

I stay away from the HOV. Those people are insane. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting tailgated a lot. But then I look around and realize that others are getting the same treatment. People are just idiots. As I told my son when he got his drivers license, never forget that half the drivers out there have a less than average IQ. Keep your expectations low and more of your surprises will be pleasant ones.
