I recently finished my very first tank, squeaking in over 500 miles, and with the Prius computer's estimate of 52mpg average. I filled up at a brand-name gas station (Hess); the pump had a sign that said 10% ethanol, which I believe is the legal standard here in NY. All of a sudden, despite my driving habits and routes remaining virtually the same, I'm barely squeezing out about 40-41 MPG ever since. This started immediately after filling up. For the first ~50 miles, I was getting about 36 mpg until I reset the thing in disgust (so that 40-41 is calculated without that first 50 or so miles). Can I presume the gas is defective in some way, or is there another explanation? I know that AC can make a difference but about 10 mpg? And though we have a heatwave here in NY, the mileage drop-off started before the heatwave hit, and without a change in my AC use. Would the car have been shipped with the tank full (and without an ethanol additive), or would it have been filled by the dealer, presumably with the 10%? Any other guesses?
Many factors, check tire pressure, dramatic drops that I've seen have almost always been due to one tire being low. The 10% Ethanol will have an impact as will A/C use, esp. with cooler settings and higher temps.
Yeah, I recently ruined one of my integrities with a puncture. Had a nail punch a hole and the side walls were ruined. Mileage was sucking for a few days as the tyre slowly leaked. Went out one morning and the car was listing. That explained it.
I agree, the only time I have had a significant drop in mpg was when I found a slow leak and the tires were 10 psi down. Tire pressure is definitely first thing to check.

I'd averaged 52 mpg counting before I'd learned more economy tricks, so I'm sure I was averaging mid-50s for the last 100-200 miles. I was thinking "how many miles do I have on the car now?" and wrote down the answer. I reset the MFD when I filled up, thus the low MPG reading on the second tank--the reading does not average in the first tanks mpg average.
Yep, it was the gas. I filled up at a different service station when 2 bars were left; at 67 miles on the new tank, my average MPG jumped from the mid-40s, which was the best I could average on tank #2 (or low 40s driving more "normally"). Filled up there with NO Brand and got rotten milage back to Pa. Refilled at home and am back to good milage. Thats with Sunoco or Hess with 10% ethanol and always running tires as per manual. I just increased pressure to see how that affects milage. Plus trying to get more miles out of Integs. Water in gas gives lousy milage.
Man I am glad to see this post. I thought maybe my batteries were dying .It just happened to me and I have dropped about 10mpg this tank. I have to go back and see where I filled up, but I think it was Shell. Am I supposed to be looking for 10% ethanol?
I don't think a 10% ethanol blend would knock you down like that. How about your tyres? Check to see that they're properly inflated. Even one tyres with a very low pressure will put a very noticeable dent in your mileage.
