I have some experience in so much as regrets in selling a Prius. I would warn, that it's easy after a year or two...to start to take all the Prius does provide, efficiency, clean emissions, great fuel economy, for granted. I don't know if I would put it on a soul crunching regret level, but I surely miss the "machine" as a whole, the Prius represented. The quiet, relaxing ride, and the really amazing fuel economy. I now get in the 30ish range, with my ICE Honda Fit. Which by many other standards is actually pretty good. BUT...I can tell you, you discover pretty quickly there is a significant difference between 30 and 50. Bottom line, it's the difference between filling up every 300 miles, and filling up every 450+ miles. If I had to do it over again would I do it? Honestly, probably not. The Prius was a better machine. That being said? If you face the reality, of what you will be losing, or giving up, and simply want something different for any number of personal reasons? Then moving on from a Prius or Hybrid, is really just moving on from any choice. But my warning would be, it's easy to take for granted, after a while, what benefits you are getting automatically from owning a Hybrid. Do not make the decision lightly.
ouch! Thats what our PHEV minivan gets, in CS mode. Maybe next time we're both heading down the same highway - we can drop the rear seat rows & toss the fit in the back. On a serious note, and maybe I missed it, did you mention here on PC Why the swap? .
I made a post, when I "traded in" my Prius. My profile has for a long while now, said "Other Non-Hybrid". I answer what I can, or feel is helpful from my memory of Hybrid Ownership, and mostly from literally years of Prius Chat participation. But I'm not hiding the fact, that I no longer own a Prius. Why the swap? I don't know. Weak moment? To be honest, I like the Fit. I had a Fit before The Prius. The Fit, is a great sub-compact hatchback. Coming up on 2 years with the Fit, and for the purposes of this thread, just trying to be honest in my opinion with the OP and myself. There are things I like about the Fit better. I might be in the great minority, but I actually like small vehicles. The Fit is smaller than the Prius, I like the agility and driving feel of the Fit. I like versatility with it's configurable fold down seats. But as I said, would I do it again? No. The better decision for myself would of been to keep the Prius. But you live and learn in life. And, The Fit is a nice vehicle. I know too many people just trying to make ends meet, without the luxury of such a high level decision as Prius or Fit, or any newer vehicle. So I'm not going to complain. I enjoyed my Prius Ownership. I enjoy my Honda Fit ownership. Different Horses...but I like and liked them both.
Yep, and most will usually come back unless they go full electric. I had an older 07 or 08 Pacifica for a short time and it killed me putting $60 / 17 gallons of gas in it. Just a big relief maintenance-wise (pretty much nothing...ever) and a huge financial relief knowing it takes just 7-8 gallons to fill. I guess if u got something newer and fully loaded it would overpower any regret from not having a prius. I've been driving priuses since 2013. Only 2 short periods I was prius-less....and I had major prius withdrawals. You could say I relapsed both times.
I wonder if @bwilson4web had regrets. He replaced a Prius with a BMW i3-Rex and purchased a Prius Prime a while later.
The exact scenario: April 2016 - 2003 Prius gifted to housekeeper (who had terrible cars) May 2016 - Replaced with 2014 BMW i3-REx, 6000 miles, end-of-lease, dynamic cruise control, automatic emergency braking, auto-parallel park, $28k December 2016 - Sold 2010 Prius, +60000 mi, no TSS-P to another PriusChat member December 2016 - Bought 2017 Prius Prime, 2 mi, for TSS-P and plug-in, $28k No regrets! TSS-P or equivalent is worth it ... every penny! Bob Wilson
anyone reading web pages ... we are all rich - even our poorest - when compared to lots of countries in the world.
That is like saying a Yugo is the best car in the world, when compared to the deepest jungles in africa.....
It's like being shot in the face, going blind/deaf/disfigured/disabled, and saying, "well, could be worse, you could be paralyzed from the neck down"
Yep, could always be worse Still, we are the wealthiest, and often we become discontent no matter how much we have even though it's far above most. That was the point - poorly put as it was. .
Back in 2005 I did and that's why I currently drive a 3rd Gen. I had one of the first Gen 1's here in Ottawa which turned out to have the early gen triangle of death gremlin back then. So by 2005 I sold it and got a used Jetta TD planning to convert it to veggie oil. The Jetta continually disappointed in mpg, had too many repair problems, and died before I could fully fix it let alone convert it to veggie oil. It was a money pit and I actually lost more than had I fought thru the Gen 1 bugs. But hey with it's overly large fuel tank, you got this false smugness thinking you drove a lot of miles without hitting the gas pumps lol. After the Jetta died, I bought a used Honda civic thinking the cheap price would offset the less efficient fuel consumption. Yes it kind of even out in the end in the 6 years I owned it. It made more sense than the Jetta. But if it was only even compared to a Prius, then I'm better off with the car that I really liked, polluted less, and had all the windows and other parts working lol. So 2014 when the Civic died I gambled on my current used Prius. If this thing runs another 2 years with no major problem I will be about even with the Civic then. And if I kept it longer then the rest is all gravy. That's the financial side of it. The emotional reality though is I can't wait getting a PHEV right after I've justified the life of this car. I'm sure my financial sense will eventually prevail. But sometimes I can't help wishing a dump truck would total this car while it's parked on the side of the road.
>You're not getting any younger. >You can't take it with you. >You only live once. Etc, etc, etc.... ^That's^ what I told myself when trying to justify buying a Volt after having a used Gen3-Four w/Solar Sunroof for about a year. (It gave me a taste of what a real EV might be like!) Go for a PHEV with REAL EV functionality, Not one of the many 'Limited', short range, 3-Season PHEV's out there!! My saga: 13 yrs/240k mi. with a brand new '89 Geo Metro base (hwy rated 58 mpg!), Civic VX, 2 VW TDI's (running blended WVO in the summer), Gen3 Prius, Volt. Sold. Now an 82 mi range BEV w/DCFC (and a great metro area charging network!) THE cheapest and cleanest way to roll !! On 100% American Made Energy ! Easily does 95% of my driving needs -- and mostly on FREE Public charging! And I just recently bought an '11 Prius Five w/ATP, 181k mi. (For the GF and road trips. It's the household fuel hog) May be a 'financially responsible' car line up.... Or maybe,,, I'm just a cheap azz and don't like sending my dollars to the Saudi's. (You know they are a horrible country and NOT our buddy, like that guy wants us to think....)
The current Prius is much better looking than the other new Toyota & Lexus models with the big black grille. It is very possible my next car may not be a Toyota. I am currently quite pleased with my 2017 Prius though.
I'm not to good with abbreviations sometimes. My wife spent her career in the Gov't and Air Force. I have no idea what she is talking about when she gets together with former co-workers. I got: EV,WVO, and GF
EV == Electric Vehicle. I think WVO == Waste Vegetable Oil (used oil from food fryers) I would guess GF == Girlfriend
