i spent a bit of time googling this without much success. Anyone know what the torque is supposed to be for a Toyota spin on oil filter cartridge (not filter housing) ? I’ve read several threads that describe “good n tight” and “seated and then 3/4 turn”. Is there an actual torque specification ?
I believe the "seated and then 3/4 turn" specification is what you'll find printed on the box, or the filter itself. There are choices in how to specify such things, and when they choose to give a start condition and turn angle, instead of one specific torque, then that's what you should consider to be the spec. -Chap
Yes, of course. Toyota added this information to the Repair Manual (more info), under Engine/Hybrid System: 2ZR-FXE Lubrication: Oil and Oil Filter: Replacement, which now says, “for Oil Filter Sub-assembly Type”: (4) Using SST [special service tool], tighten the oil filter sub-assembly. SST: 09228-06502 Depending on the work space available, choose from the following: If enough space is available, use a torque wrench to tighten the oil filter sub-assembly. Torque: 17.5 N·m {178 kgf·cm, 13 ft·lbf} If not enough space is available to use a torque wrench, tighten the oil filter sub-assembly 3/4 of a turn by hand or use a common wrench. (Emphasis in original.) For the older “Oil Filter Element Kit Type” with the plastic cap assembly, the torque specification remains 25 N·m. The same SST is used for both types.
Thanks. I have a couple of the “filter element kit types” left over from my 2013 and on their box, it specifies a torque for the plastic cap. I haven’t yet purchased the new oil filter for the 2018.
Opps- correction.... the box doesn’t specify the torque.... it just says to torque the plastic cap and to not over-torque it.
Huh, a little less than the old style, were only the filter element is changed, and the housing is permanent: 18 foot/pounds.
When I started looking into whether there was a torque value for a Toyota spin on cartridge, I was amazed at the many descriptions folks used for installing an oil filter.
