It was a discussion on the Dutch solution to flooding compared to the US solutions.
The Dutch basically don't have floods. The reason for this is they have done a lot of work on preventing damaging floods. The US, on the other hand, waits until a flood occurs (for the most part) and then spends lots of money to recover from it.

Great episode, I highly recommend it.

 

Add insult to injury. WE DO NOTHING TO PREVENT/MITIGATE future flooding! NOR will elected officials advocate the other alternative solution: relocate inhabitants in flood prone areas to higher ground. Prevention/Mitigation or relocation will be cheaper long run vs repetitive Ground Hog day (w/o Bill Murray).

 

What do you mean, once you have a thousand year flood aren't you good for . . . oh, gee, maybe not.

 

It's actually even worse than that... Consider Houston where in the past 20 years developers built tens of thousands of homes in the flood control corridors because they successfully argued that they could use the streets and road systems as a substitute flood control corridors, which led to one million destroyed vehicles and 30K houses destroyed. But don't worry, it's no one's fault because "the largest storm on record caused the flooding." It's just an act of god and there's nothing you can do about that much rain, so why bother?

Or if you want another one... Consider Weyerhaeuser, one of the most corrupt logging companies in the world. In our state every time there's new rules created to protect Salmon or other endangered species as well as every time new rules are written to protect people from being killed by logging-caused landslides the lead for the state who coordinates the writing of the planning documents always gets a high paid executive job at Weyco in less than a year and the state ethics review board always says nothing unethical happened.

So a little less than a decade ago the "largest storm on record" flooded the I-5 for over a week about a 1/2 hour south of me. This shut down our primary route for interstate commerce had a near 8 hour detour for over a week causing tens of millions of dollars in losses to the state economy.

This happened all because most of the forested land upstream has filled all the creeks and rivers with silt, so there's no room for the water anymore... Add to that this the landslides that happened during this flood, which are directly caused by Weyco's unsustainable logging practices and what is the outcome 10 years later?

The state is trying to figure out how to tax every property owner in the watershed, other than the largest timber land owners most responsible for the damage in order to fund a multi-billion dollar reservoir to "protect" the I-5 from flooding again.

 

I remember following that flood in 1993... Remember reading updates everyday in the newspaper and as a young fledgling enviro I was so grateful that there was the political will and forethought to protect large areas of land to prevent this problem in the future. Little did I know the amount of stupidity and greed that Newt Gingrich and his billionaire-funded political wackos were about to unleash on this country over the next quarter century. These days we live in a world of magical thinking where there are no consequences for environmental problems as long as you demonize and hate enviros, because they're the problem not defying the laws of natural systems.
