I recently purchased a cheap prius, and the shocks are pretty obviously in need of replacing. I want to build up this car to be a great road trip car, so I really want it to drive smoothly and comfortably. I am wondering where the best place to get shocks and struts for a 2010 prius two would be? and roughly how much would they cost if I wanted to replace all of them with higher end parts? I can do the work myself, so I just need to purchase the parts.

Just researched this and ordered the parts from RockAuto.

    Part Number, Part Type, Quantity
    KYB 349035, Shock Absorber, 2
    KYB SM5840, Shock Mount , 2
KYB SR4246, Strut / Coil Spring / Mount Assembly, 1
KYB SR4245, Strut / Coil Spring / Mount Assembly, 1
MOOG K750043, Stabilizer Bar Link, 2

Total for me was $545 with tax/shipping and using a 5% discount code which can be found on multiple sites. Parts will be replacing the originals on a '12 with 211,000 miles. Long over due and good weekend project in the next couple of weeks.

As far as upgrades, I did not find many options and the ones I found did not have the best reviews. KYB are basically OEM, but after 211,000 miles anything will feel better.

The other way to improve the ride is tires. I'd suggest putting money into better tires than premium suspension parts.

what are the symptoms? I never had to replace them in any of my cars yet (under 160,000 miles). yet in my prius there is grunting noise on bumps that started under 100,000 miles.

just overall discomfort when hitting bumps or cornering. I can feel that the car isn't handling it as well as it could be, and I feel pot holes and stuff way too much

Wow thank you for the detailed reply! I have some pretty solid new Goodyear tires on, it really feels like it's just the shocks. I don't think the person who had it before me drove it softly. $545 isn't bad at all for the parts! How labor intensive would you say it is? If you did the work yourself, what tools did you need, and if you took it to a shop to get them replaced, how much did the labor cost? Again thank you for the reply!

Thank you thank you! And I checked it out, it seems like most places have the full set coming out to around $500-600. When you replaced yours, did you do it yourself or have a shop do it? if a shop did it, how much did it run you? and if you did it yourself, how much work was it and what special tools did it take?

I'm in the middle of replacing the front struts and not off to a good start. The two knuckle bolts needed a combination of an abundance of PB blaster, air impact, 6 feet cheater bar and choice words to remove. Finally removed the old strut and found the new KYB strut top bolts alignment do not match.

Does anyone know if this can be resolved without returning them? Just compress the spring and rotate? Thanks for any guidance.

Trying to understand the problem. That 3 bolt assembly doesn't line up on the car? It turns on it's own.

Got it now. Went ahead and installed with the 3 top bolts finger tight. Twisted the bottom strut to the right orientation. I've done strut assemblies before, but, first time of seen this. Thanks.

Finished replacing the struts and shocks.

    Tools that were used included:
    - floor jack
    - 6 feet cheater bar
    - 1/2" impact wrench
    - 3/4" torque wrench for the knuckle bolts (177 ft.-lbs.)

I was able to the remove and replace the second strut in an hour. The first one was painful because of the knuckle bolts.

    Suggested technique:
    - soak in pb blaster overnight
    - run the impact wrench for 5 seconds on both ends
    - use the 6 feet cheater bar and slowly break it loose
    - finish removing with the impact wrench

Depending on the person and skill level, this could be done in a day. This was spread out over 3 days and included a spark plug change, brake pins relubed and lots of breaks.

Would you reciomed the KYB? Dont want to end up with stiff ride. Found them at ebay for 127/ pair.

KYB’s work. I just went OEM as I know a guy out here who got me a 30% off price;).

I also figured if I could get 175 k miles or more out of the originals, they were good enough for me on my daily driver:).

But I’d buy KYB’s if I was in a spot and had nothing else(y).

Thought kyb's what the car had originally I thought. I have them. Not harsh, don't scrap the front end so much anymore either.

Seems like more expensive than i thought. A complete KYB set including the sleeve and the spring costs $170 ea at ebay.is that the price or can be found cheaper. Any direct link for a good deal will be appreciated.
