This is very true, temperature and driver are the two biggest contributors. Elevation doesn't matter in the end because it get's averaged out. I have found stopping distance to be one of the largest factors, it's amazing how many people will accelerate into stops, this kills fuel economy pretty badly on the Prius.

The Prius is not a good car choice for short trips. Although most people buy it for fuel economy, its primary goal is to minimize pollution. That is why the engine runs until fully warmed up. Fuel economy is a secondary goal.

I'm not sure about that: it's short trip mpg suffers, but still very good? And warm up is fast.

It takes 3 - 5 miles total trip to recover from the first engine startup, in my experience.

Prius is not as good on short trips as on long trips. Same is true for a conventional car. But under the same conditions, I can't imagine any case where the Prius would not get better mileage than conventional.

    This!
Now, if looking at unconventional, a plugin hybrid which can operate solely on electric for the short trips, will give better performance.

A couple of hours block heater plug-in helps with warm up.

Only if you were to plug it in so it is full to start with from your SOLAR. Otherwise it'll make little difference.

If, say they put double the size battery in PRIUS allowing another 20km/hr and another 1.2 km on battery - when it's flat, it'll take 2, maybe 3 times the time to charge the battery using the ICE & Regen.

Only other possibility is if you live on a hill, and after the battery goes low, Regen will fill it up again. Yes, one of my commutes is like that. 1 km reasonably flat, no traffic, drops the battery to low -> ½ km in traffic while the ICE runs and warms up -> 1km downhill where it regenerates and gives amazing economy for that 2-3 km.

Gas costs me about 5 cents/mile. Electricity costs me about 3 cents/mile. In a 28 mpg car, gas would cost almost 10 cents/mile at our local prices. To me, a reduction of 70% is more than a little difference. Even five versus three cents/mile is a 40% savings. Nothing to sniff at on my paycheck.

Constant 55-57 mpg (calculated). Driving like Mad Max, in the city, in PWR mode, with AC on everyday. Never do any "Eco" tricks.

    Go figure.

I can't figure it out. I just drive it.

    Edit:
I only calculate the mpg after going 500 miles, and refueling. (I usually have one pip left on the gas gauge.) I never look at the daily short-trip "from the flag" numbers. To me, they are meaningless. And it varies constantly. I just drive my Prius like a regular car, and the gas mileage has always been great. I don't understand why some people make it harder than it is.... Just drive it. ;) And I'd still be happy if I only got 40 mpg!

The fourth gen Prius has really upped the bar in mpg, for various reasons. I'm jealous...
