I have a 2006 Prius with approximately 150,000 KM on it. Two shows, including one Toyota dealership, has told me that I need to have the hybrid battery replaced. I am in Athens, Greece and the best price I can find on this installed by a Toyota dealership is 2,200 EUR with a one-year warranty. I am hesitant to go with a used battery or to have the battery repaired as the market is small here and I don't think this work is common. I have two questions: 1. Is it worth getting a new battery for a nearly 10-year old Prius? 2. Does the one-year warranty make any sense? Toyota Greece told me that this is the warranty given by the manufacturer but I see in this forum that replacement batteries in the US are provided a 4-year warranty by Toyota. Thanks for your help!
1. If you intend to hang on to the vehicle for another 150,000 km, then yes, it would be worth it. Probably less worth it (proportionately) if you intend to hold on to it for a lesser time. 2. The length of warranty is not an indication of how long it will last. With electronics (statistically speaking), if something is going to fail, it will fail in the first year. If it doesn't fail in the first year, it will last the stated lifetime. As I say, statistically speaking. The warranty in the US was increased to three years - IF - the battery was installed by an authorised Toyota dealer. Otherwise it is one year. This was probably introduced as a response to the perceived "better" warranty offered by the second-hand (aka re-manufactured) battery sellers in that market. On a new battery it has very little real value. It does provide a better 'feel good" factor. In terms of €2,200 - that seems like a very reasonable price when compared to (the current FX rate) US prices. Hope that helps.
1- If there many prius in Greece? 2- If this kind of battery is 100% new or used battery Toyota brand offer different warranty to global market as per sales volume, different temperature in each countries etc.
It’s a two year old thread and the OP has not been here in over 2 years. Don’t hold your breath for an answer
