Are there hardware differences between the Safety Sense that comes with 2017 Prius Primes and the hardware required for Safety Sense 2.0? From what I was able to glean online, Safety Sense 2.0 in the new Corolla uses one camera and one radar, just like the 2017 Prius Prime. Please, no speculation in replies here. If you know, please reply. If you are guessing, that won't really be helpful.
The millimeter wave radar sensor assembly is an intentional radiator, so some information is required to be filed with the FCC to obtain grants of equipment authorization. It can be seen from these public filings that the radar used on the 2019 Corolla Hatchback, the only vehicle now available with TSS 2.0, is a new design. The Owner’s Manual (PDF) for the 2019 Corolla Hatchback says the FCC ID for its radar is HYQDNMWR009. In contrast, the Owner’s Manual (PDF) for the 2017 Prius Prime, which has TSS-P, says the FCC ID for its radar is HYQDNMWR008, as do the Owner’s Manuals for the 2019 Corolla, 2019 Avalon, and 2016–2018 Prius, among other vehicles. The FCC’s equipment authorization database has internal photos and test reports for the HYQDNMWR009 and HYQDNMWR008, and the hardware designs are clearly different. There’s not enough public information to say whether the new design was necessary to implement TSS 2.0, however, or if the new part was designed and certified only for other reasons, such as reduced cost or improved reliability. TSS 2.0 and TSS-P are marketing names, and not all vehicles use the same parts; the 2019 Camry with TSS-P, for example, uses a radar made by Continental, FCC ID OAYARS4B, not either Denso radar mentioned above.
