rims from a gen2 onto a gen4, safely yes or no?

Although the bolt pattern may be the same, there are other considerations like offset and rim width. Offset has a significant impact on interference for brakes and suspension components. If the bolt patterns, rim width and the offset are identical, then they should be interchangeable.

 

Can't remember for sure (I had one ), but didn't the Gen.2 have 14" wheels??

 

Gen 2 standard rims are 15" and the touring model rims are 16". I don't remember the rim widths so I'm going to leave that to someone else.

It looks to me that the 2008/2016 rims should be interchangeable.

The difference is the 2016 uses a 195/15 tire and the 2008 uses a 185/65 tire. Many tire shops will refuse to install a tire that doesn't match OEM, so that may be some of the problem...the difference between a 185/65 and 195/65 tire is about 1/2 inch of height (195 will be 1/2" larger diameter) which will affect MPH reading

Personally, I don't see any issue with installing the 195/15 onto a 2008 rim.

If using 2016 size tires on a 2008, you'd need to make sure there's no rubber rubbing when the steering wheel is at max rotation each direction and your mph reading will be slightly lower due to tire having less revolutions per mile..

If installing 2008 sized tires on a 2016, your mph reading will be slightly high, since the tire will have more revolutions per mile.

 

What condition are the 2008 rims in? You don't identify what country you're in - that could make a difference to your local regulations. Though the tyre shop should be able to guide you.

I'm not sure of the life-span of an alloy rim - it could be worth enquiring.

The other thing to consider is keeping the 2016 rims for when you sell the car, to return it to original. Someone might get upset if you sell it to them in 6 years time to discover that their rims are 16 years old.

The 185 and 195 numbers are the section width of the tire in mm. So the 195 tire will also be 10 mm wider than the 185, thus the concern about rubbing on the car that was spec'd for the 185 tire.

 

I’ve mounted full size tires on space saver rims before, even fairly significant changes don’t have much affect on rubbing so long as the offset is adequate .
In fact narrower rims reduced the “bald edges on front tires” issue I was having on one car.

And It’s not like he is putting LT Inflation tires on his car, going one size up or down is moot, MPG hit would likely be under 5%

 

Someone mentioned that they used Corolla rims, steel I think, for winter tyres. Double check that it was a Gen 4 they were talking about - or try one at a wrecking yard.

If I end up on an around Australia drive, I'll investigate the Corolla wheel as a 2nd spare.

 

All UK Gen 2s have 16" rims.
I know the Gen 3 17" rims fit on a Gen 2.

Yeah this 15" rim works, on 3rd gen, and I would suspect 4th gen as well:

Corolla steel rim, part no: 42611-02471 (2003-2008 corolla or matrix, CE, LS, S)
steel rim lug nuts, part no: 90942-01007 (plain, open-ended, galvanized)

For me in 2010, the rims were $70 (CDN) apiece, and the set of 20 nuts was $31. I'm not that enamoured of the nuts though: they don't have shoulders, so it's easy to damage the rim paint with a socket, and they're open end, making the stud tips rust prone. I put a drop of oil on each, that helps.

I use a 2" ABS end cap to cover the hub opening: with a rubber band (cut from old bicycle inner tube) pushed over the hub flange, it's a slight interference fit. Without a cover the hubs rust up very quickly, Toyota rustproofing sucks.

It's worked for me, same tires for 9 years now, just the stock 195/65R15 size.
