An onslaught of codes

    Hi All, I hope I’m in the right place


    Having a strange onslaught of codes and issues that I’ve run out of money to continue to professionally diagnose. Here we go:


    My 07 with 265k miles has been acting bad, the brakes intermittently acting as if Antilock was engaged even when I am barely touching them, other times, smooth as can be. Also loss of fuel efficiency by 10 miles. I’ve had a p0420 for about 3000 miles.


    Then these codes with triangle of doom and a few other lights (NOT ABS):


    P3000 - battery control system HV ECU

    P3012 - battery block 2 becomes weak

    C1259 - anti lock brake HV regenerative fault

    C1310 - fault in HV system / ACTV Brake Solenoid

    B1400 - something about the AC


    NOW, After transmission service, battery fan cleaning service, MAF sensor change, throttle body cleaning, and hybrid battery replacement I’m still experiencing the brake bump to a lesser degree, slightly better fuel efficiency, a bit of a louder engine with rougher idle showing the following codes:


    P0420 - catalytic converter

    P0403 - EGR circuit malfunction

    C0700 - left front solenoid circuit malfunction related to brakes

    P0301 - injector 1 misfire

    P0300 - random intermittent misfire

    U0100 - lost communication


    I’d love to solve this done.

    Where is the best place to begin, Prius chatters?

    When you say "continue to professionally diagnose", who has been doing the diagnostics? How much money have you put in the car since your "onslaught"?

    If you look up the kbb value of your car, it probably would be less than $3000. The hv battery will be $2000 plus $1500 for the catalytic converter (so you can pass smog). Then the misfiring, probably due to low oil and then engine damage would be more money. And finally the brake issue, which normally would come down to a brake actuator replacement for $1000+

    Are you sure you want to take on this project?

    Can we clarify this a bit? Are you saying that you recently had:

    And apparently God is playing a joke on you because you now have:

    P0420 - catalytic converter

    If this is accurate, I feel for ya brother. The first group of codes was probably all due to the HV battery block 2 failing and should have cleared up with just the HV battery replacement, if done correctly. I'm curious why the MAF/Tbody work was performed?

    As for the second group, I find it coincidental that you had a MAF change and a t-body cleaning and now you're getting misfire codes and a catalytic converter efficiency code. That area of the engine may warrant a bit of inspection for quality of work just to make sure everything was connected/properly sealed/clamped/etc. And an EGR code? On a Gen 2? That's a bit unusual, you may need to second check that one..

    When was the last time the spark plugs were changed?

    Jc, it is a task I will have to jump into. I’m going to have to find salvaged parts and do labor myself as far as is possible..I’ve been using midas and Toyota but have had questionable experiences with both.


    TMR, you are correct. It had new spark plugs 2 years ago and has had regular maintenance elsewise. I’ve driven it 130k in the last 3 years despite all of its drama. I plan to pass it to kids so I’ll just keep repairing, especially while my battery is under warranty. I just want to start ruling things out. New coil packs and plugs are in the mail. I’m most concerned to: discover what might be draining my batteries, not cause engine damage, and rule out or address the brake mystery which showed codes before AND after fresh hybrid battery.



    A bit of history:


    Bought in late 2015 at 135k and the hybrid battery fail within 2 months. Couldn’t afford Toyota service, so got a good warranty from Midas. Changed 12v at the same time. 1 month later the ABS fails and Toyota changed it out under a recall. 1 month after that, the hybrid battery fails again (inside warranty), and again (inside warranty) last week. The transmission and maf service and the fan cleaning were required to be ruled out by Midas before honoring warranty on battery. When I walked out, I was being told the the p420 was the only remaining code and that I should fix it before it messes other things up. Since I live in California, I changed the sensors (maybe 6 weeks ago) to see if I could avoid it for a bit.

    I was literally driving away from the auto shop when the red triangle and some other lights (still no abs) came on and threw the other codes I mentioned (looked with my own scanner). I ran and grabbed a mechanic and his scan tool and he only pulled the U0100 code. So I’m wondering if the communication fail could be the reason for the other seemingly erratic codes. What do you think?

    Update:

    I’ve been driving the car and have some new patterns to share in hopes this can be diagnosed. Midas and Toyota failed to experience the ‘brake bumping’ that I am experiencing to increasingly worrisome degrees.

    I drive a lot, 50k per year. Each day when I start the car in Southern California, the brakes are smooth. After several hours of driving (usually around town) the brakes begin ‘bumping’, ‘grabbing’ and otherwise acting as though I have slammed hard and antilock has been engaged. I’ve been driving very carefully and slowly as I’ve read of a few ‘full failures’ here and dont want that experience. Why might it seem that the warmer my car is, the likelier I am to experience this?
    Does anyone think it could be related to the C0700 code? More importantly, am I on my way to full failure? ABS was replaced by Toyota in late 2016.

    Additionally,

    Reliably, at a certain non-sloping section of the 405, traction control light begins flashing (no brakes applied) and stays doing so for a good solid 3 or 4 minutes. My tires are new and are rotated and serviced once per month. Tire shop has confirmed that my new (albeit cheapest model) tires are the same, right for my car, and properly pressurized.
