Okay so I was testing my water pump to see how it works. It spins. But it shutters right at the beginning. Not sure if that's what's supposed to happen. I uploaded the video to YouTube let me know
How many miles on your Prius? Seems normal, but when I swapped out the water pump at 173 k miles on our 2010, there was a difference between te old and new in terms of smoothness through rotation. What activity are you working on? Good luck and keep us posted .
I've heard new will perform slightly better. But if it ain't broke don't spend 250 I say. I just bought a prius, cleaning egr and intake. Supposedly overheated and losing coolant. Compression is fine. Oil looks good. And other than redder than normal coolant everything looks good. I'm swapping the thermostat for precaution, that things a pita with everything in place
So have you verified it is losing coolant? A $250 water pump is cheaper than doing the head gasket or swapping engines. If swapping the thermostat, you’re right there to do the pump as you are finding out. I think the egr cooler is more of a chore than the thermostat, in comparison. Good luck with your project.
I can't say any of your points are wrong. But I still want to wait on a pump. Changing that won't be too bad imo. Does it give a code for failed pump? I have not verified it's losing coolant. I towed it home, started wrenching and doing research. When it's all back together either I have a good prius or one that needs to be dismantled all over again.
It’ll throw a code, but you’ll be without coolant flow when it does. You can imagine what happens next. This happened to another member here at around 157 k miles. Happened suddenly and without notice. A mag drive pump doesn’t give failure warnings like usual water pumps do. I took this as a cautionary tale. I did both the thermostat and water pump together along with the egr cooler swap and circuit cleaning, spark plugs and changing the coolant at the same time. A bit of a job, but I had a spare set of experienced hands spending some time with us (grandkids are a great lure).
That's basically what I'm doing. It is a lot of work. When I save some money up I'll buy the pump it does seem worth it. Thanks for your help!
