How much electric distance are the Primes getting?

Give it a few more weeks. I started out with the "guessometer" saying about 24 miles on a charge. But it learns how you drive and the rate at which you are using up your charge, and with each charge it will adjust and generally get more accurate. Now after two months, a full charge shows me at about 33 miles.

I am getting 38 now.

 

There are a lot of factors that determine the EV range. Weather, driving style, and terrain impact it the most I think. For me it is very unpredictable. Some days I can get upwards of almost 36 miles on a full charge, other days barely get to 30. No real change in temps either. I suspect once the weather cools off the range is going to plummet. I try and hypermile a lot. Love the car, but ready to take the full EV plunge in the not too distant future. Lol

 

Me I'm getting around 28-29. Driving speeds between 50-60 on my 18 mile commute. So it gets me to work on EV and about 10 miles roughly on the way home.

It also looks like I will be able to charge at work so I will be 100% EV once I get the 2nd charger to tote around.

 

We get between 22 and 32 miles indicated after a full charge, the range primarily driven <groan> by the average temperature during charging and operation. We live in the Pacific Northwest, with lots of rain, but an overall lack of temperature extremes. So far. Our actual mileage per charge tends to be about 10% lower than indicated. Running on gas only, we get around 55 mpg, with a mix of highway and around town. Overall, very, very happy with the car. Much better snow car than our previous 2008 Prius. We do wish it charged faster, had double the electric range and got back the 3" lost in the cargo space to the larger battery. I figure that means a battery only 4X more efficient than the current one . . .

 

Just think of you had a gen-3 instead of going from gen-2 to a Prime. Toyota goes to great lengths to keep their offerings affordable. Each generation gets improvements without sacrificing price.

 

Well, I used to get 35 occasionally, and since the very mild almost indiscernible temp change, I’m now getting only 21 mile range. Disappointing. However my overall mileage is now 106 mpg instead of 175mpg. Still very satisfying compared with gas guzzlers. I’m curious what’s going to happen next summer. Do I contemplate a HV battery cleanup on contacts?

 

Last October, after owning the Prime for about six weeks, I decided to drive out to an apple orchard in the countryside to acquire some difficult-to-find Jonathan apples which Mrs Bear insists are the absolute best to use for apple pie. The orchard is about 13 miles from home, so the round trip is 26 miles.

When I left my house, the Prime showed an estimated range of 26 miles. No problem getting out there but I was concerned about getting home without using gas. So I diverted slightly from the shortest route in order to stop for coffee at the cafe in a Whole Foods market where there is are a couple of free L2 charging stations. While I sipped coffee and nibbled on an expensive healthful organic multi-grain scone, the Prime regained its full charge. Hence, no difficulty getting home with the apples.

Well, it's that time of year again. And today was a beautiful sunny autumn Saturday, perfect for a drive to the country. This time, Mrs Bear came along and we had a very pleasant drive. When we got to the orchard, the Prime was still showing an estimated range of 22 miles. So we loaded up the apples, some corn, some yellow cherry tomatoes, and sundry other produce and headed home.

This was the same trip but with the weight of a second adult in the Prime. Also, the Prime showed a beginning range estimate of 35 miles (compared with 26 miles under comparable conditions last year.) And we arrived home with the Prime still showing a remaining range of 6.5 miles.

From this experience I conclude that: (1) my driving efficiency may have improved; (2) in calculating range, the Prime has learned that my driving efficiency has improved; and, (3) my confidence in the car's range is much greater.

And, (4) I can save needless calories by not having to stop for coffee and a scone.

I fully expect the Prime's EV range to diminish as the weather become colder. And, while we've been almost totally EV for many months, once winter arrives, I anticipate making more use of the gasoline engine just for keeping the interior cabin warm and the windows frost-free.

 

It starts winter season in Finland and I am sometimes using ski racks. In this trip I have been driving so far 500 miles. EV range has been in the range of 25 miles still in normal driving around 50-55 miles per hour. Even more amzing is avarage consumption. You can actually get to the level of 63-65 MPG with ski racks

 

Made it to work in 35.4 Miles on EV mode with about 5% left on battery. It was about 20 miles highway with some traffic and 15 miles local.

I'm getting 38 Km (winter) to 53+km during summer.

 

Got 36.7 Miles today on battery.

 

This is my charge screen from today. Right now it’s 66 degrees outside. In the summer months I would see about 32 to 34 miles. On my older generation Prius I would block the grill in the winter months. Has anyone blocked a grill on the new Primes?

I can get 41 miles during the summer when the temperature is around 80 ~ 100 everyday. Although to be honest I never really feel I can drive up to 41 miles, more like 35~37 miles. The distance is only an estimate.

 

My commute is 80/20 highway/city and about 22 miles. During the summer I get around 30 miles, but with winter weather, add the heated seat and steering wheel and 70 degrees F air, I’m getting about 18-20 miles. The cold weather is brutal on miles.
