Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    10,000 miles. Maybe that bottle is the accumulation of several dumps? Considering the typical OCC capacity, you'd want to check/empty every 5,000 miles max. Winter is worse?

    Did it every 1K or so.(y) .Yes Winter is worse. That's when it accumulated the creamy white stuff.:eek:

    This how much i got with aroud 4,000 miles roughly. I put the catch can after i already did my oil change and it had over 1,000 miles.

    I installed the HPS short arm air intake with the truncated K&N high flow air filter. That allowed me to install the Ruen oil catch can in the space freed up by the removal of the air filter box. occ installed Prius V 001.jpg

    sorry for the late reply!

    I eventually got rid of the inline water separator type, and went back with the more common can that everyone else is running. I cant explain why but, somehow the smaller inline one causes my Honda Fit to lose power. Going back to the original metal can alleviated the issue. (I did verify, I followed the correct flow path when installing the hoses)

    Nonetheless, I would have hated that small one anyways. Being so tiny meant, more frequent emptying of the inline water separator, whereas with the much larger metal can I can probably go 15000 miles before needing to drain

    It was NOT easy to drain, another reason why I got rid of it. From what I could tell, the drain method was to depress the needle on the bottom. I did not attempt to turn/spin anything. The plumbing is determined by a directional arrow on top to indicate flow path, I believe these inline water separators have a valve of some sorts built in, to only allow air flow in one direction. And the clear part appears to be glass

    I will say, it does appear to filter the oil much better than the other occ

    Thanks @Georgina Rudkus for the hose clamp tip. I replaced all my screw clamps with those, looks much better. (y)

    I changed my oil this weekend after 9k miles and pulled approximately 3oz of oil out of the OCC. Had a bit of satisfaction seeing that not going into my manifold.

    I have installed a Mishimoto OCC. to remove oil vapor from entering intake manifold for a year. It works well.
    However, I am always wondering that will the OCC. increases air flow resistance and reduce the vacuum (negative pressure) inside the engine?Especially for the OCC with dense filters.
    Furthermore, what happens if the filters start clogging in case of forgetting maintenance?
    Will clogging cause the seals of the enginge leaking?

    Closed hood maintenance or those that can be forgetful could find challenges with certain solutions ;).

    Until you have a good handle on how much material you catch, is keep a close eye on it and plan accordingly :).

    I check mine on our 2010 woth 191 k miles every Saturday just to ensure there is no surprise (y).

    The drain tap on my moroso is at the underside, and taking the engine underpanel off for every oil change, I'm staring at it, I've mounted it on the lower cross beam. Maybe I could hang a tag on it too, saying "DRAIN ME". Kidding...

    With a 6 month interval (and 5000 kms at most) I've never got into trouble: my fall drain is an ounce or two, and spring drain a bit more, maybe due to more humidity through winter.

    I think it would be bad to let it fill up, for sure. And it's also good to monitor the condition of the interior, say every 2 years: clean out any mesh on the inside. At least till you get a feel for how quickly it clogs up.

    My lower mounted can gets its dipstick checked often enough and the steel wool pad is changed every oil change;).

    Unfortunately the last round I didn’t compress the wool enough and it wrapped around the dipstick :cool:.

    Resulted in a revisit of the can at 1 k miles:).

    Got about 1 ounce out(y).

    Since the cold weather moved in last month the temperatures have been in the 30s and 40s and my OCC drains have been much more frequent. We drove 180 miles north to Sleeping Bear Dunes for a color tour on October 28. The next day the engine started with a slight misfire. I found the OCC canister almost full after a week of use.

    Just for comparison, my OCC is close to the inlet of the air intake. I believe the OCC gets cooled faster by the intake air around it and distills the PCV fumes. This is desired behavior.

    I have taken my OCC away again for winter. I cannot live with the fact that it can freeze and then problems start.
    During warm spring days my car gets OCC back.

    From my experience, as long as you have the time to empty the OCC frequently enough it's not a problem. It gets down to around 0*F in our Michigan winters. I change it up to twice a week depending on how cold it is.

    But I imagine if you let it fill up and then freeze it would present a problem.

    When it's 0*F I've had to rinse out the can with hot water.
