Q. I want to program Gen 4 Prius smartkey fob using a cheap mini VCI cable. Does Gen 4 Prius key programming procedure same as Gen 3 Prius? A. There is no way to self-program (aka "chicken dance") a gen3 or gen4 fob without Techstream or similar tool. You CAN program Gen4 fobs using a later version of Techstream / MiniVCI. It works very similar to the Gen3 procedure. You need a dealer new (i.e virgin fob) or a used fob that has been unlocked / reset / virginized in order to easily program it with Techstream. If the fob is used i.e. not virginized/reset, you'll have to do a seed reset on the car and that requires locksmith credentials or purchasing a calculated passcode in real time while you're doing the seed reset with Techstream.
Paul, thank you for answering my question. I have one more question regarding key programming. With my understanding, Techstream has an option to delete all the key fobs except for one registered key, then program additional new keys afterwards. No reseeding needed to delete lost keys as long as one working key is available. Is this correct?
You can delete all other keys except your one working fob with Techstream, no reseeding needed. You can only easily add new virgin or "unlocked/reset"" keys. If the key was previously programmed to another Prius you need a seed reset passcode in order to add it to your car and have to go through a more complicated procedure with a 16 minute waiting period etc. If you don't have Techstream etc you can look for a local automotive locksmith, they are usually way cheaper than the dealer. If you are near Boulder, CO you can come to my shop.
I just registered a new key in my gen 4 Prius (or Prius Prime) using Techstream & mini VCI cable. I was also able to delete the lost key fob. The procedure is identical to gen 3 Prius key programming. Now, I'm getting a message in my dashboard 'New key registered. Contact dealer for details.' Will this go away? If not, how do I get rid of it? Thank you.
I'm trying to program a key for a 2019 Prius and it seems like none of the Techstream programs I can find out there will work past 2017 or 2018. Does anyone know of a way I can accomplish this myself?
Use the current Toyota Techstream software, available with a Professional Diagnostic subscription to techinfo.toyota.com, from $65. If you’re just adding or removing keys, you don’t need the Smart Code Reset feature or Security Professional subscription.
