I melted my car (with picture)! Help!

That's too bad.
Reading those warnings labels on the back really makes you wonder. Just how much toxic chemical is worth it...to get the smell of coconut?

It's neither here nor there as far as what to do today, but I think if a product actually has a red slash warning symbol denoting dying fish, and a warning that it can be harmful to aquatic life...long term...
I don't care how good it smells....I'm not putting that in my car.

As far as damage done?
I can't really tell from the pictures. Is this sticker or decal over the damage? Or would it be possible to use very light grade sandpaper and touch up paint to satisfaction?

That's frustrating because it's the type of damage that most people getting into your car won't notice BUT you will know it's there.

Best of luck in finding a "compromise" or better solution.

 

Those liquid scents are usually warned against in the owners manuals, as acidic if I recall correctly. (I must confess the last manual I read front to back was for a 2008 BMW). I hence forward try to avoid buying those liquid based air fresheners. Last one I think I got was Ozium to try to get rid of a stench of rotten milk....

Yes, the ingredient in question may be in an orange peel, but at what concentration, most likely much less than in that bottle of fragrance. At least here in the USA the order of ingredients indicates the relative amount/concentration of that ingredient. So the first ingredient is the most, 2nd second most, 3rd third, and so on. I do believe in this case it was listed first? (I’m on my cell phone with little ability to check back on posts while I post).

 

The shifter appliqué does not cover the raised ring around the shifter if i recall correctly.

 

For food products, yes. I'm not so sure any such law applies to products not meant not meant for human or animal consumption, though it does seem like a reasonable assumption.

Nice, this is some really nasty stuff. It's kinda the reason I never got the "Air Freshener" when I used to frequent the clear coat scratchin car wash!!!

Ouch, that's a costly little item indeed indeed. I do commiserate, but perhaps a word in the Asda Manager's ear could encourage a contribution toward your costs. Better than adverse publicity or threat of a claim, but a call to your local trading standards might suggest best way forward. Anyway. I wish you good luck.

Wow, I’m sorry this happened to you and your car. I’m looking at the red caution diamonds on the back of the package showing a dead tree and a dead fish. Hmmmm..

Use only pure certified organic essential oils, especially in a confined environment like a hot vehicle cabin. DoTERRA from Salt Lake City Utah are the best.

 

Better yet, dab some of those pure certified organic essential oils onto an inconspicuous corner of some of your interior plastic, and see what they do to it.

In theory, shouldn't all the ingredients in this product be available in certified organic form?

While I'd bet the several of them are synthetic for cost reasons in this particular formulation, every 'chemical' on that ingredient list is naturally available, and ought to be available in 'organic' versions. Especially the first one. And it will probably melt the Prius plastic just the same.

 

That's the point - something as seemingly innocuous as the oil from a citrus - no matter how pure, how certified, how organic (and how essential) - this stuff, at full strength, seems very non-innocuous.


Bear in mind - in an air-freshener, or as an ingredient for a detergent etc, it could maybe only a trace present.

Yup found in nature, and we eat it, but doesn't make it non-reactive to everything else around it as the OP found out.

We've been talking about the ingredients in the smelly thing which melted the dashboard. Which, on researching (if looking up GOOGLE can be called researching), shows it has quite serious side-effects on the human population - up to and including death.

Then - it turns out that the same ingredient can be a natural product as well. In oranges and other citrus fruit. One suggestion was that it should be certified organic. Which - if it's growing in my yard, is unlikely to be certified organic.

At which point I said "I hope they don't ban citrus".

There are many seemingly innocuous foods which can cause problems - Urushiol in Mango can cause contact dermatitis - Limonene in Citrus Peel can also cause contact dermatitis - Phytohaemagglutinin in beans (not cooked properly) - can cause severe gastric problems ... et al.
