Is it possible to determine if this is the original factory battery in my 2013 Prius? I need a car battery for a side project and if this is original I'll utilize/replace it. Are there any recommendations for a replacement battery?
Most likely it is the original. I believe the 09-12-12 on the center sticker is September 12, 2012 manufacture date. At least that is the coding I use when I examine these batteries. Sorry, off my game today....091212 should be December 9, 2012. First 2 are the day of the month....second 2 are the month and last 2 are the year
Just to ask the obvious: are you second owner of the car? Hard to tell, it might be. Maybe test it, check the at-rest voltage for starters, with a digital volt meter, first thing in the morning. For a much clearer picture: test it with one of the lower electronic load testers. Here's a pic of our original battery, for what it's worth (2010 Prius hatchback). I see some differences, but the labels likely undergo revisions. CCA is noted on yours, which is an improvement, for example.
I am the second owner of the car. The car was originally purchased/used in Chicago and that's where I live/use the car. Batteries generally only last 3-5 years here; I doubted this battery could be original given its 6 year age and lack of corrosion. Would this battery last longer because it is inside the vehicle and because this is a hybrid?
Just like this one I bought in 2016 to have as a back up spare.... 231215W = December 23, 2015 manufacture date code...
The battery generally lasts longer in the Prius if it has not been deeply discharged. The battery only boots up the computers in the car and closes the high voltage battery relay. The high voltage battery is used to charge the 12 volt battery and to start the engine when needed. In the traditional car, the high current draw to start the engine in cold weather tends to reduce their battery lifespan.
If the car is in park does the hybrid battery or the 12v battery start the engine? Where is the best place to buy a replacement battery?
That's debatable: the hybrid battery turns the engine over, but if the 12 volt battery runs the "intelligence", and without that the car won't start. Just for giggles check with a dealership parts department (or two), see what they're asking. Pep Boys is one place I've heard that has a compatible and low-cost battery, by Bosch IIRC.
Toyota cor where and that is a stock battery imo. Why not get another that will last just as long and run everything correctly? Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
