Alternative to the 12v 45ah battery?

    Heat definitely doesn't do batteries any favours. The best life I've had was where the battery is in the airflow - the worst was a Mitsubishi van where the battery was tucked in a corner under the seat - always hot. Moving PRIUS from the boot to under the bonnet possibly has increased the amount of heat it receives. But - I've got 2 years out of mine so far, which is more than the Mitsubishi van ever got from a battery.

    yups! i was using a desulfating trickle charger but i think if there is a internal short or worse it prob won’t help.

    but knowing only now that this prius battery is designed to be refilled i think it also might have been a factor. so check your water levels people!

    In previous threads, I’ve mentioned several LN1-type batteries sold in the U.S. and in Japan with characteristics very similar to the original. As I wrote two weeks ago, though, I’m not aware that anyone has tried one and then posted here to report whether it worked.

    yup tks i read those! very helpful. extracting from the bosch catalog i will add that there appear to be 3 models 544.035 or .036 or the agm LN1 that are size compatible with the same 207x175x190 dimensions as the stock battery. depending on whether your gen4 is LHD or RHD please replace with .135 or .136 as necessary. however unlike the stock fukuwara battery these 3 models all are not refillable. (seems like bosch refillables are not available in gen4 size. )

    i will be trying to get mine replaced with one of these and post back if successful.

    so i went back to my servicing workshop (3rd party hybrid specialist workshop that is also servicing my 3year warranty) and they said they only carry this battery as the replacement for the prius as the stock battery is too expensive. the cost to me was about 80usd. the brand i believe is a bangladesh manufacturer using german technology. it’s also a maintenance free battery but the dimensions are identical to the stock. let’s see if it can also last two years..

    The extreme temps do make a difference. Cut off everything - AC, lights, etc. when you are getting ready to cut off the car for a while. Cause otherwise, you could end up like me - my GPS screen went blank which then meant no backup camera and thus not able to put in Ready Mode. When this happens, I was able to give it a couple to a few minutes for it to heat up in winter from a freaky cold day ( I had accessory mode running to heat up interior of car) and the opposite just recently with triple digit heat index days.

    Now from my research as a newbie. The Prius battery is a smaller 85 cold cranking amph hour battery and thus is basically a golf cart sized one. Due to the hybrid battery and alternator, it doesn't need to be big and powerful, which means that we have to be aware of this for when plugging in stuff to trunk and hooking directly to battery. The voltage level is low, so even with a medium to large inverter, if the item to be powered require 11.7 or higher voltage, then use a wireless app or controller to cut it on only after having run aka drive for a few minutes first, so the power is there. I just know hooking straight up to battery is a more continous flow vs fluctuating current like if plugged in front DC outlet.

    So please chime in and correct me as needed and add any additional information that could be helpful to all of us. I'd like confirmation that I have been learning correctly thus far.


    Questions:
    If battery is replaced with a more powerful and larger AGM, how would that effect the current flow and all for the car and how effects current flow and power to power extra hooked up stuff?

    If I made little slide out rubber pieces to fit between the battery terminals and the hooks of cables to an inverter, would those little rubber pieces stop the tiny tickle of energy lost from keeping inverter hooked up to terminals? It's a pita to hook and unhook it due to stuff in the car ATM, but I could simply pull out and slide in (well enough I guess ) the rubber slip/stop piece.

    Why not replace AGm with small lithium battery?

    Anyone know what the wattage or amph hour ends up being of the oem AGM battery? There's not a simple equation to figure out cold cranking to watt or amph hours.

    Are you asking in relation to your PRIUS v? If so, it would be better to ask on the PRIUS v FORUM - they'd be more familiar with your car.

    Some of what you say or ask is just general Prius battery knowledge, but the Prius v and the Gen 4 Prius use different batteries, so I agree with @alanclarkeau that the Prius v forum would get you in touch with more people who know the things that are specific to the Prius v.

    will not fit your gen 3 battery bracket, and may not be suitable for inside the cabin.

    Excellent bit of kit, I have the 3.8 version. I revived a dead 12v disability scooter battery with mine. After the charger stopped and the LED indicated that the battery wouldn't hold a charge I let it rest and ran it again, same result so I thought I'd give it one more try before scrapping the battery and lo and behold, third time lucky, it passed the not holding charge LED and went on to fully charge the battery. It's now held a full charge for two months and is working fine.
