I'm too chicken to use the Parking assist feature. What about you?

Depends how fast you're driving when you hit it?

 

I'm sure you are correct, there had to be some movement at impact. I just didn't have a slow-motion camera to capture it. After that, I was thinking about taking the entire thing down, but my wife's brother does visit us from time to time. He was so proud of his carpentry, and I must admit it was an improvement to having nothing there but a patch of dirt.

 

Parking lot bollards - those metal poles guarding entrance gates, gas station pumps, etc.. I have seen more than one car fender creamed because the driver did not see the pole. I wonder if the Prius sonar can see them and beep ?

 

Mine certainly seems to see them. But it might depend on the pole. Not tested it until the AEB kicks in either.

 

Based on a diagram I see here Toyota Parking Aid Systems, it seems that the sensors can detect an object up to 25 cm (10 inches) on either side of them, so that if the sensors were placed no more than 50 cm apart, they should detect every object. I measure a distance of about 50 cm between each one on both the front and back of the car, except the 2 innermost ones on the front where the distance apart is about 70 cm. Is it possible the radar unit behind the hood emblem acts as a sensor to detect an object directly front and center? It wouldn't make sense that anything in that location would be missed. So it looks like anything directly front and behind should be detected, as well as anything closer than 25 cm from each corner sensor. Presumably automatic braking would be employed if necessary to prevent the car from hitting an object within any of those ranges.

If the requirement that the object be within 25 cm of the nearest sensor is accurate, I can see how I managed to hit the wooden planter almost directly on my right front corner. The indentation on my bumper is below the sensors, not more than 25 cm below them, but because it is almost half way between the 2 nearest that corner, the distance from either is greater than 25 cm (about 30 cm from one and 42 cm from the other). As luck would have it, the distance from the ground to the top of the planter is about 40 cm (high enough to be detected by the sensors one would think), but because I was facing uphill on our sloped driveway, the bumper actually struck the planter at a point about 20 cm above the ground, just low enough to escape detection by the sensors apparently. It seems my car was a victim of the perfect storm. I now believe my angle of approach from the side had nothing to do with my scrape, but my angle of approach from below did.

 

Mine saw one and braked for me as I was about to hit it. I was busy trying to line the car up with the side lines of a back in parking bay using the mirrors, not looking at the camera screen and didn't realise how far back I had gone.

 

Don’t forget, if you parallel park into a tight spot, the IPA will also drive you out of that spot!

 

Once again it is Saturday, and once again I take that CX-5 out of, and back into, that #@%$! tight parking space.

I like our Costco's parking lot: all the spaces generous, and some like 18" double line between each stall, for a little more elbow room.

You never seem to see that in condo ads, something like "generous, extra wide parking spaces". I think it'd sell like hot cakes.
