after a few tests using a Google home mini, I found that the Amazon Echo Dot was a clear winner all installed in my brand new prius Prime 2018! A usb cable is used to power the device and it fits so nicely right under the dash. The lights emitting from the Dot just gives it that extra oomph. I have it currently paired with the Bluetooth but Aux cable also worked nicely. However Bluetooth allows me to skip through songs using the buttons on my steering wheel... With regards to internet, I have a hotspot connected in the car but your phone tethering will work the same.
Nice idea, but why not use one of the car specific Alexa devices like the garmin speak? Other than price. iPad ?
I'm not aware of Garmin Speak but I guess it would have had the same functions? I did try a Google Home Mini, but the bluetooth was not connecting well with the car. iPad would have been a little bit too much especially that I already have a 11.6 screen in the car
Garmin speak has Alexa but cannot do drop-ins as of yet. Not very large either but uses your cellphone as mediation and Bluetooth. Cellphone not connected to radio? Sound plays on your phone. I have the speak plus which has dash cam as well built in. It is also a garmin navigation device. iPad ?
what exactly are you going to use this for? just a few voice commands or the fact that it can do whatever you ask and play through your car's speakers right?
Awesome mod We have two dots within the house that we use all the time, would love one in my Prime . Question, where exactly do you connect via USB? It doesn’t look like you have a cable running from to the outlet that’s near the center console....
Awesome. Let me know if you decide to try this out. I connected the USB and AUX cables from right beside the cup holders. You can easily slide the cables right beneath the center console along the passenger's side and then bring the connectors out from the front. I used 3ft cables which was a perfect length.
Looks like amazon will be coming out with an echo for the car later this year. Right now it’s by invitation only. View attachment 158019 iPhone ?
depends on what you use it for. I use mine for my music, so it's pretty much the same as if I was streaming internet music from my phone. If you plan on using just the basics such as the weather forecast, and daily news briefing, I can't think it would go anywhere over 1gb.
