    There is a special gravel pit where all the used batteries are being tossed. A mining company owns it:

    Rich in nickel, cobalt, and other rare earths, just treat them as highly enriched ore.

    Yes, they spend a second life in stationary power systems first.

    For EVs, yes, most are still in service.

    People don’t want to throw them away, ideally, because of the cost of extracting the materials, but yes, cost-effective recycling is still fairly experimental for now. However, the market for such recycling is getting increasing.
