    Hello,

I recently bought a Prius with 2 Master Keys.

I decided to get a 3rd key. It cost me $259 to special order the key from the dealer, only to find out I have to pay an additional $70 to get it programmed, and $17 to have the keys cut.

There was a BIG misunderstanding between the dealership and I. When I thought the $259 price included all of the above stuff.

Anyways, so now I have a blank key and FOB.

I am told I can get the key copied at any locksmith. However, is there any way to program the FOB without going to the dealer?

Been searching through PC and the search function isn't working out for me.

If someone can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 2006 Prius with no SKS. Both Master keys are here and still work good. Just want a 3rd key.

    Jimmy

Supposedly these instructions program the non-SKS type remotes. They have a black Toyota logo on the back. I see you have package 1, so you've got a non-SKS car. I can't tell you for certain if these work, but they have been widely circulated and supposedly do. Let us know if they work for you.

    (1) Open drivers door, with key removed from ignition switch.

    (2) Within 5 seconds:
    a) Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch twice.

    (3) Within 40 seconds:
    a) Close and open driver’s door twice.
    b) Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch twice.
    c) Close and open driver’s door twice.
    d) Insert the key into the ignition switch and close the driver’s door.

    (4) Within 40 seconds:
    a) Switch ignition ON and OFF once to program a remote transmitter code while still retaining the original codes. OR twice to program a remote transmitter code while erasing the original codes. OR three times to check how many remote transmitters are currently registered. OR five times to erase all registered codes.
    b) Remove key from ignition switch.

    (5) Within 5 seconds:
    a) System should respond by and automatically locking and unlocking the car. It should cycle itself once, twice, or five times depending which mode was selected in step (4). One to four times slowly to indicate number of remote transmitters registered.

    (6) Within 40 seconds:
    a) Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK remote transmitter buttons, together, for 1.5 seconds.

    (7) Within 3 seconds:
    a) Press LOCK remote transmitter button.
    b) System should now lock and unlock vehicle. Once to confirm registration, twice to indicate registration has failed.

    (8) Within 40 seconds:
    a) Repeat button procedure to program remaining remote transmitters.

NOTE: To exit programming mode: Open driver’s door.

NOTE: A maximum of 4 remote transmitters can be programmed.

    Well,

After a few hours of trying. I am pretty sure that sequence above doesn't work for the the 2006 model. I never get a response as it says you would on Step 5.

Quite ironically, there's a sequence to program the remote in the 2001-2003 model, that successfully programs the remote! This sequence is VERY similar to the sequence above, only very slightly different.

I can lock and unlock the doors using the remote now. However, I can't start the car with the FOB.

I'm confused, Jimmy Hua. You said you had a non SKS car. If you're trying to "start the car with the FOB", you have Smart Key! What's up?

You have to place the FOB in the slot in order to start a non SKS Prius.

You need to have ALL the fobs present and with the car. The way it works is they have to repogram all the keys at the same time. So if you have 2 and get an extra, all 3 need to be re-programmed. If you leave one at home or whatever and have only 2 of the 3 programmed, the one odd ball will not work.

Shopping around isn't an option. THe next closest dealer is in Hawaii.

Getting the car to Hawaii, and back, with keys will probably cost around $2500. :(

I think you could have 1 key and 1 new key, and they can do the programming correctly. But U R right and I am not going to take any chances, I am going to bring all the keys to the dealership.

Too bad that sequence above didn't work.

Weird how the 2001-2003 sequence worked. The 2001-2003 sequence to programming the FOB didn't work either, but it's possible it's because I'm not doing the translation right.

It states to switch the key betwen the lock and on position. You can't really do that with the FOB, so I have ben cycling it between the IGN-ON and fake-on state then off. It's too hard to cycle the brake on and off 5 times.

with the remote sequence you need to leave it in the IGN-ON state before you pull the FOB out. And that worked for programming the remote.

Anyways. off to the dealer I go I guess.

    Jimmy

Even the sequence in post #2 is vague.

In Step 2, when you cycle the prius with FOB on and off, do you step on the brakes or not?

Also, do you leave it in the off position or the "IGN-ON" position?

Anyways, I tried all combinations, and nothing seems to illicit a response from the car.

I'm 99.99% positive there is no way to program the keys if you have SKS.

No frigging way. I've never seen a non SKS Prius, and had no idea. My bad.

Has anyone on here every used these instructions to successfully program a non-SKS remote? Or have another version that worked?

I have an 06 prius. What does SKS mean? I would rather try to program the additional fob on my own than pay to have it done.
Is there a difference between an ignition model and a power push button model? We have an '05 and an '06. Just got the 06. We had the dealer program the second/additional fob to the tune of over $500. A locksmith is willing to do the programming for $300 plus the cost of the fob. Please advise ASAP so that I can call and cancel the locksmith.

Just worked for me with the non-SKS (black) variety of key on my 2006 Prius. I had one old, beaten up Master key and 2 blank, replacement keys I bought here:
Key for Toyota Prius 2004-2009 Fob Remote Keyless Entry 89070-47180 MOZB21TG Black

It comes with instructions literally copy-pasted from this website (PriusChat) but personally I had to do something slightly different - and I DID get this to work! So:

    Get into car
Unlock all doors with Old Fob
Hold Brake and start car with Old Fob
Hold Brake and turn off car with Old Fob
    Release Brake
    Remove Old Fob

Insert and remove Old Fob 4 times
Insert 5th time and leave it there

Open and close door 6 times - doesn't need to open much but latches do need to engage and disengage completely each time, so you will need to look stupid.

    Remove Old Fob
Normally red car with key icon inside it flashes now to warn you you left the key in the car, but it will now light up solid to indicate it's in Key Programming Mode.

    Insert New Fob
Red car with key icon begins blinking, blinks about 2 minutes
Red car icon stops blinking, goes dark - programming complete.
    Remove New Fob
    Open Driver door, close
    Insert New Fob
Hold Brake and Start car with New Fob!

It was annoying that lock/unlock required additional programming, but just for completeness here are the directions again - they come with the ordered keys above, also copy/pasted from this website verbatim, and they worked perfectly as-is. But one caveat:

YOU START WITH THE DRIVER DOOR OPEN. And leave it open. So the entire beginning of the instructions, you're sitting there car door open, and then the default position for most of the instructions is: Driver door is open. I had it backwards and was completely confused until I watched a video and realized I was doing it backwards.

    Unlock doors with Old Fob
Open Driver Door AND LEAVE IT OPEN - no key in slot yet either
Insert Old Fob and remove twice within 5 seconds
Close and open Driver Door (and leave it open)
Insert and remove Old Fob once
Close and open Driver Door twice again (and leave it open).
    Insert Old Fob
    Close Driver Door
Tap Power once without Brake pressed - car starts utility mode 1
Tap Power again - car shifts to utility mode 2
Tap Power third time - car turns off
    Remove Old Fob

Add Mode engages, indicated by doors locking and unlocking themselves twice.

Press and hold both lock and unlock buttons on New Fob for 5 seconds - red light on key blinks.
Let go then tap Lock - doors will lock and then unlock to indicate Programming is complete.

I would like everyone to note that this works for programming it to lock and unlock. There is a separate process to get it to start and one can find that in the post below.
    Thanks for all your help!!!
