Engine wiring harness safety recall (model year 2016–2018)

My wife told me about the recall yesterday and didn't want me to park the car in the garage for fear of burning the other four vehicles that share that garage and everything in it. Thanks to everyone with enough good information and pictures I was able to inspect my 2016 and confirm that mine has not rubbed or did any damage. It is close to rubbing but I have low miles, 6,700 on it.

 

So when they replace the wiring or put a rubber sleeve on it, do they replace top cover for one with no sharp edges or do we just wait until the edge has rubbed through the rubber sleeve ?
I think I might 3D print something better for this.

After some thought on the matter, yesterday I decided to go ahead a be a bit proactive when I noted earlier the contact between the leftmost cable and the cable cover. Instead of adding tape around the cable itself, I just detachd the cover at the front and raised it enough to employ a Dremel Tool and a burring bit to remove enough material from the housing so that the cable was no longer touching. No damage was noted to the electrical tape covering the cable. I'll still take it to the dealer when the recall is done, but probably just get an early change to the power transfer case oil while I'm there.

 

Just checked my Prius on Toyota Owner's website. I'm affected .

My car has just under 15k miles on it. I am impacted by this recall. See pictures below. It does not appear the wire coating was broken but for the moment i am leaving the black plastic cover loose so as not to dig in any deeper.

 

I believe it was imported from another country to Singapore by a seller other than Toyota. There may not be any warranty.

 

I do believe that for recall purposes, current owner of the car will get the issue fixed for no charge - regardless of the ownership history.

 

Recalls are separate from warranty - as I said earlier my Daihatsu, I was at least the 3rd owner, well out of warranty, but Daihatsu contacted me and recall was done free.

 

For @mark27lim and other readers in Singapore: Unless something has changed recently, this shouldn’t be a problem: “Toyota agent Borneo Motors said it will rectify safety-related recalls affecting parallel imported cars. This is because Toyota Motor, the manufacturer, underwrites all the cost associated with such rectifications” (“Can claims be made for safety recall rectification?,” Straits Times, November 11, 2017).

For all readers: The NHTSA website now has the Defect Information Report (PDF), with some details I hadn’t seen previously about how Toyota discovered and investigated the problem, plus the Part 573 Report (PDF), Dealer Letter (PDF), and Interim Notice (PDF). The latter has a picture of some tesa harness tape that they’re sending to dealers; I wonder which style they selected. I haven’t seen the remedy instructions yet.

A press release about the recall (in Japanese) has also been posted on the Japan MLIT website; the documents linked from it don’t provide any new information.

 

What is the definition of the "wire core exposed"? Does that mean copper wire, or does that mean can see the wire bundle through the black protective sleeve?

 

Copper, I'd say.

 

I don’t see any copper but it’s definitely worn away the black tape. I loosen the cover a bit as someone else suggested. I’m at 30,200 miles.

By the way, I’m amazed at how quickly this recall appeared on Prius Chat. Within 24 hours of the first post, we had a diagram of exactly where the problem is. Good job locating the information and helping everyone out!

on a different note, how does one open the cover to relieve the pressure without even breaking the clips. i tried but it was too difficult

 

Use a thin, but fairly wide screwdriver blade to gently pry the upper retainer tab outwards to allow the locking tap to slide thru it. You need only release the first 3 or four retainers to allow the cover to raise enough to either just leave it up or in my case remove enough cover material so that theres an airspace above the cable when the cover is snapped back down.

 

Mine has a little over 12K miles on it and I am part of the damaged harness club
I do not trust my local dealer & my trusted dealer is 150 miles away.

I need to check closer to see if I can discern any copper. Is that the criterion for harness replacement or is just damage enough?
