Door jamming not opening

    Just to explain - go to your PRIUS and try something. Open each door in turn, and VERRRRRY gently push it closed. You'll notice that you get a SINGLE click and it will appear to be slightly ajar. If you try to pull it open (not with the handle), it WON'T open - (unless you pull the handle and it'll then release it and WILL open).

    That "first click" position is where yours is getting to when it only partly opens - but won't open completely. There must be something in the adjustment stopping it from opening completely.

    NOW that it is partly closed on the first click - push the door again, but harder, you'll hear a second "click"

    TURN YOUR SPEAKERS ON ...

    I did not get to try that out since my car was already in the shop when I saw this. They have had the car since Thursday am (no work being done this Sat. or Sun.).

    I asked my rep about the helpful advice I was given here and he read the thread but then said the mechanics have to follow a list of procedures to check the door. I asked to talk to a mechanic when I dropped my car off, but he said there was many mechanics working and he would not know who was working on my car.

    IF it is not taken care of, when I pick up the car, since they now have a particular mechanic working on it (I know because I went back today to get something out of my car and was told that) I will ask to personally speak to him.

    I was SO hoping to have another rep take care of me, but the same guy was there when I dropped off the car. I do not like the way he is handling this. My roommate also dropped his car off at the same time as me and when he called for him to pickup the car, he said he would be calling me later that Thursday. Did not receive a call and I had to call on Friday at 2pm to get any update on my car.

    And thank you for taking the time to help me. I really appreciate it!

    I finally got my car back and what they did was reprogram or reconfigure the keyless entry system and I think the FOB. I can tell it's different when it's opening it sounds different and easier to open the door in general. The rep said that's what they thought it was but they're not positive. I haven't had any issues with it but I didn't expect any since it happens usually once a month or so. The rep wasnt the best at explaining things and I was just so happy to get my car back. And sorry I was delayed by a couple of days to give you an update they kept my car for a long time ( they gave me a rental) and I just started work again (teacher) and it was hectic.

    My daughter and her hubby are both teachers. I wish you all the best as I know how stressful the profession is in UK.

    Thank you. I work with kindergarten and first grade and I am exhausted by the end of the day....lol

    I truly believe you. Daughter was head of early years at a school which had a large proportion of underprivileged children. Staff shortages meant she had to condense the year into just one large class and manage with one teaching assistant. Some of her lot were not even properly house trained :)eek:) or well fed, so I really applaud you and all such stalwart teachers. Many teacherst in UK seek private schools or early retirement because of the stress.

    It did it again but THIS time the door wouldn't even open. No sound indicating it was going to open. I thought once I got into my car it wouldn't even start but it was fine.

    I had to use the FOB manual key to open. My smartkey doesn't need a new battery. It was fine when I got home which is no surprise since this happens only once a month.

    This never happened before with the door not opening at all though.

    I am going to call another Toyota dealership even though it is further from my house.

    Guessing only.

    My "guess" is that it appears that there is a fault in the mechanism inside the door, something mechanical which the electronics aren't concerned about, as though they think they've done their job, maybe a whisker too little though, and not logging a Diagnostic Trouble Code.

    When it's locked "normally" (not using the key), and you touch the "touch lock" unlock sensor - do you hear any sounds of any of the door-lock motors activating? And - did any other doors or hatch unlock?

    [Just checking - I assume you locked it by the normal smart-locking and not with the Manual Key (if it is locked with the Manual Key, the other unlock processes are then prohibited until unlocked with the Manual Key again)?]

    If it's night time - do the interior lights turn on as you walk up to the car, and after unlocking, come on fully? (I'm not sure if that happens on a USA model though - yours could be different).

    The smart key only unlocks the drivers door. I actually have to press the unlock button inside the car to unlock the passenger side. Super annoying!

    And yes nighttime interior lights do not turn on as I walk up to the door. I'm in the US.

    And I believe I heard the door mechanism until today click to open. I will have to a listen tomorrow. Today nothing made a sound including the car the smart key


    Although the red light did blink when I tried to unlock it through the smartkey.

    Ask the dealer to follow Toyota’s “Fix It Right The First Time” Repair Protocol, which they can access on Toyota TIS and others can view by subscription to techinfo.toyota.com. If the dealer can’t duplicate the problem, they should open a case with Toyota’s Technical Assistance System (TAS), the dealer-only support line, and ask for a Toyota field technical specialist to help with diagnosis.

    It’s fair to assume the dealer’s technicians are doing the usual checks for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and following the basic troubleshooting procedures in the Repair Manual (also on techinfo.toyota.com), but you might ask if they’ve checked the Operation History logs kept by the car’s computers. Using a Toyota Techstream diagnostic system, these are accessed under:
    • Body Electrical > Main Body > Utility > Operation History
    • Body Electrical > Smart Key > Utility > Operation History
    Note that the first of these isn’t discussed in the Repair Manual, so the technicians may not know that it exists, but it has a time-stamped record of every time the doors are locked or unlocked. Knowing whether the computer tried to unlock the doors, at the time one of the malfunctions occurred, might help determine the cause of the trouble, even if the technicians can’t reproduce the failure themselves.

    Re my last post - if you press the "UNLOCK" button on the FOB twice quickly, it should unlock all doors too - at least my last 2 cars did that. Unfortunately it's not available in Australia.

    It's designed for single people going to a car in a dark alley - you can unlock, jump in the car - and someone can't jump in the passenger's door.
