Are good year tires any good?

Hi - I won't comment about the tyres, as our Aussie tyres would be different (or are you in Australia?).

BUT - how many kilometres have you got from your original tyres?

 

Goodyear is a major manufacturer of tires but tires are such a touchy subject. You will find people who love a certain tire and people who hate them. Go to Tire Rack and read the reviews on the ones you are looking at.

I just put over 51,000 on the GY Assurance Fuel Max tires that were the OEMs for my Volt and that's what I just put back onto it.

 

The GoodYear Assurance Fuel Max tire is what you want from GoodYear, not some SUV tire.

Those will cost you perhaps 5 MPG.

Our prius c came with the goodyear assurance tires on it. No complaints yet, they seem OK.

 

First, you do NOT have an SUV so those tires probably are not a good choice.

Second, if you are looking at a set of 4 Michelins that cost over $600.......something is probably wrong with THAT selection too.

Some Goodyears are great......and some Michelins are crap.
Tell us the exact model of tire you are looking at and you will get better answers.......maybe !

Many people rate good or bad by many different things. You need to decide what good means to you.....
Does good mean;
Mileage warranty / longevity?
Price?
Wear characteristics?
Puncture resistant?
Low rolling resistance?
Handling / ride?
Combination of multiples above?

Don't just ask something that is so subjective, rather tell us what you want!

I prefer Michelin for my CFO's ride, but use Bridgestones for the truck.

It's really going to come down to what you consider to be more of a value adder for your car.
If ride comfort for you is more important for a G4, then you're probably a little less worried about fuel efficiency and so I'd lean towards the
Michelins, since they also have better street cred in the wet stuff.

OTOH
If the Goodyears are half the price, then they're going to wind up being more than half as good.....

Consider getting a quote from either Sam's or Costco if you're a member of either one.
This is because they have a flat rate install price, road hazzard, and they include free rotation and spin balance for the life of the tires. If you regularly rotate and balance your tires they might last a little longer, and many times the OTD cost for 4 tires at one of the big box stores is just as cheap as the teaser rates from the on-line stores.
YMMV.
If you're a member of Costco and they put nitrogen in the tires, you must remember to take the little black valve stem covers off of your tires before you have the tires changed, otherwise you will have to spend another dollar and buy four black ones afterwards.

Both colors do the same thing, but if you take your car in for service and the service manager sees green valve stem covers on your car then they might think that you do not know very much about cars and try to sell you unneeded service.

Which Michelin are you thinking of that cost more than $700 for a set of tires? That's way too expensive. I priced my Michelin for less than $335, but that was Xice3 winter tires which is not what you are looking for. I don't have experience with Goodyear, and even if I had an experience with it, my experience maybe quite different from yours. Tire selection is quite subjective, and there are always some compromises. Most average drivers do not get to drive enough sample of different tires under same condition, so objective comparison can be very difficult.That said, the price range of $350 for set of tires, I think you have plenty of options. I do suggest checking TireRack, but that may just make your decision more difficult. So many tires to choose from. Good luck.

Since everyone is talking about GY tires, I'll offer my 2 cents. My only experience with them was on a 2010 Corvette Grand Sport. They came on the car from the factory - run-flat Eagles. They did an adequate (not terrific) job as performance tires, but were the noisiest tires I've ever had to endure.

 

I had a set of the Goodyear Fuelmax on our Gen 3 and I didn't like the ride, mpg, or wear. I had the Assurance on the Volt and they were replaced under warranty and I had to pay $200 at 10,000 miles. The sidewalls were cracking. It looked like premature aging. I got rid of the Volt at 50,000 miles and they were showing a lot of wear. I've had the best luck with Bridgestone Potenza's. If the Goodyears were about $200 cheaper than Bridgestone, I would probably buy them again.

As I mentioned above, I had no problems with the GYs and even replaced them with GYs again.
