Can you sell your Prius w/Carpool Lane Stickers?

    On the other hand, I was told at the FasTrak office that we could NOT use the Prius-assigned transponder in any of our other cars, and we could not use either of our TWO other transponders in the Pri. The Pri one came with a coupla little colored sticky dots on a corners so we could tell the difference.

    I believe removing the stickers DOES basically destroy them...they end up saying "VOID" all over the place (unless, of course, you mounted them in a removable fashion...in which case--I hope you DO remember to move them when you leave the car, or someone else surely will try to use/sell them).

    Just a reminder to everyone, that Fran Pavey who sponsored the original bill for the Prius, is termed out this year and CANNOT put through another bill to extend the Carpool stickers.

    Enjoy the 2 1/2 years we will have had our stickers (Aug 2005- Jan 1, 2008)....

    I for one did not buy our original Prius in 2004 with this in mind, because it did not exist. It is a real nice benefit at the moment though!

    My neighbor with his Prius with stickers has been kicked out of the carpool lane by CHP twice now in the last month - guess overcrowding?

    Officially, sticker users have the right to use the HOV lanes with the following stipulations:

    From the DMV:
    The stickers allow single-occupant qualifying vehicles to use high-occupancy vehicle lanes (carpool or diamond lanes) in California. BUT NOT AT ALL TIMES!

    There are articles all over the web about sticker users being kicked out of HOV lanes when they should not be. The law states:

    Carpool lane use may be restricted at any time by state and federal law for all Clean Air Vehicles carrying fewer occupants than the posted minimum requirement, if their presence is determined by Caltrans to contribute to increased traffic congestion, increased travel times, decreased sustained travel speeds, or other factors affecting any carpool lane or segment of that lane.

    The CHP *can* kick you out (IF CALTRANS TELLS THEM TO, BUT NOT AT THEIR WHIM):

    Clean Air Vehicles that meet the posted minimum occupancy requirements for carpool lanes are not subject to the above restrictions.

    The LAW has not yet been changed, has it? Still looks pretty whimsical to me.

    Actually, this IS the law.

    State Law:
    The legislation, AB 2628 – sponsored by Treasurer Angelides, Cal-EPA and the California Air
    Resources Board, and authored by Assemblymember Pavley (D-Agoura Hills) – would allow hybrid
    electric vehicles, or HEVs, that meet tough emissions and fuel efficiency standards access to
    California’s high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, or diamond lanes, regardless of the number of people
    in the vehicle. The legislation would take full advantage of the available capacity in the State’s HOV
    lanes while encouraging California motorists to use less fuel.


    CalTrans can petition the Legistlatures (sp?) to remove the ability of Hybrids meeting the standards they, themselves, set. If the Leg. amends the bill, then Hybrids cannot use HOV lanes anymore.

    In order for CalTrans to allow Hybrids into HOV lanes *AND* still receive federal funds for HOV lanes, they had to have the above passed to bypass HOV regulations for more than 1 person to be in the vehicle.

    So, you see, CalTrans must ask to have the bypass lifted in order to stop you from driving in that lane IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A STICKER!

    CHP cannot do it w/o ALL THE ABOVE--IF they DO, simply wave that PDF at them.

    I could imagine a cop waving someone out of the HOV lane if they were driving slowly and holding up traffic. But I would think it could be anyone -- even a van full 'o kids -- not just a Prius w/stickers.

    The certificate has also the name of the registered owner.

    Before I traded in my 2003 Prius I removed the stickers and when I got the registration for my 2006 I send the application to the DMV for “replacement†stickers and attached the removed stickers and the original certificate.

    The $8 check was deposited on Sept. 23d – Any time now should receive the new stickers. :D

    Re 2): living in an area with no HOV lanes, my dealer probably didn't know the rules when I traded up from 04 model to 06, because he didn't ask for the other two stickers (I had applied only two of the ugly things). I frequently use Los Angeles freeways, and City parking, so the stickers are valuable to me. I left the stickers on the 04 and simply applied for new ones for the 06 with $8 check. No problem. I've had the new ones for several months, now. Apparently interpreters of the rules interpret freely.

    It was passed by the legislature and signed by the guvernator, but it does not go into effect until January 1, 2007.
