I have a 2017 Prime, and I typically drive either of 2 way... Short around town trips where I can stay on EV only and use no gas until I return home and charge again. So I guess EV Auto is best for this in case I need extra power? The other is long highway, often mountain, etc. Is there a mode that better for this usage that will stretch the EV battery usage out longer and therefore get better mileage? TIA
ev auto will use the engine willy nilly. best to stay in ev mode around town and hv mode on the highway. ev auto if you don't want to deal with it, the computers decide.
You can use EV Auto if you want to let the vehicle choose when to kick in the ICE and when to use only EV power. That may be convenient for some, but would drive control freaks crazy. Generally if I am going on a trip that I can't complete in EV mode, I put it into HV for cruising at highway speeds and when approaching an uphill (where EV mode is least efficient), and save the EV for the rest. Then when I get to the point when I should be able to complete the trip using the remaining EV power, I switch back to EV and forget it.
in city with a lot of stop and red light, (like in Montréal), I use B mode with EV power for better regeneration and less brake. À Montréal, j'utilise le mode B avec le le mode électrique EV pour une meilleure regénération et pour user moins mes freins.
Never use EV auto. It’s either EV only around town or HV mode on the highways. Although I must admit not liking the sound of the ICE kicking on. Just for kicks, I’ve tried to see how far EV only will take me on highways and it’s about 22-25 miles generally. I’ve now reached 11 times this summer getting to work at 35.7miles on EV only. Each time I do it, I have a huge smile on my face. Kinda makes you wonder why Toyota didn’t match the Chevy Volt on EV range around 50 miles. That would be sweet!
Just like you , if my destination is out of my Ev Range i always deplete the battery at the end of the trip. Have you noticed that in HV Mode the car stay longer in EV during HV operation with a semi-full battery ? With a 100% charged battery the car will dip in the EV reserve just a litlle .. it think it makes the HV mode even more efficient
I only use EV Auto when I'm merging onto a fast moving, crowded freeway. I've been caught flat footed with the anemic HV mode once and don't care to repeat it once the car hit about 60 mph. It also gives you more power passing on a 2 lane road, although I'm unsure it gives more power than HV mode.
