I saw one install video where they just drilled a hole in it (while it was still in place) and then just stuck a tool thru the hole to release the clips. Which I suppose I could do, because it's going to need a hole drilled anyway for the camera to mount...but drilling it while attached just kinda makes me nervous.

It's not that hard to remove. I did not have any videos, I couldn't find a decent one.
The one I saw was taken with a stupid phone! It was unwatchable....
It didn't take much to remove it.
You can try a search about removing the rear hatch panel removal....

    Try this:

Okay, I found this one. The guy just drilled it out and used a scribe to unlatch it.
So maybe you don't HAVE to remove the outer panel.
    The music is irritating though.

    aterfy27,
When you remove the lower panel on the inside of the rear hatch (the panel with the two hand holds) those hand holds fit into
metal pockets in the hatch. So make sure to tilt the top of the panel outwards and lift up a bit) after you get it free.
It wasn't that hard to remove the panels. I got a bunch of panel removal tools from Harbor Freight that made it easier.

So....I was able to get the "punch out" plate removed and drilled. Camera is mounted and got the wiring routed all thru the hatch, all the way down to where I've got it tucked into the rear left door's sill. Hatch trim has all been put on and put back together no problem!
Got too dark to keep working, so I've called it a day for now.
Now, need to figure out how to get the wire from the RL door sill to the driver's door sill area....Not sure the best way to snake the wire thru the lower B-pillar trim.

Also, when routing the cable thru the hatch and into the main cabin, I had to detach the rubber wire seal at the top of the hatch in order to be able to get the cable thru. I got the hatch-side of the rubber tube reattached, but I cannot figure out for the life of me how to re-seat the cabin side of the rubber tube....

    aterfy27,
Did you try putting the cabin side rubber in first ? Also did you try some silicone spray to help lubricate it ? Make sure you
don't use something that leaves an oily film.

    Success!!
I've never owned a vehicle with a backup camera before, so I'm not terribly sure how good I did with the alignment...it seems a little "steep" to me (in that my gut says the camera is pointed a bit too much towards the ground). I'm not sure there should be so much of the bumper in the picture? At the same time, it's pretty well mounted in the punch-out area...not sure how much room for adjustment I really have.

I put a cone out on the ground behind me and reversed to where it was right on the green line - measured right around 4 feet from cone to rear bumper. Pulled to where the cone was on red line and that was about 18 inches. Does like it's positioned/aimed okay?

    Great job! (y)
The guidelines do look a little "short", but my factory-installed OEM 2011 backup camera also shows quite a bit of my red bumper across the bottom of the screen. (I keep thinking it is a red warning!) And, sadly, the factory camera does not include any guidelines. :(

My back up camera does a good job, it records with the front one!
I use my side mirrors and small oval mirrors I install to back into a space.
The rear camera doesn't help at all for me. But I got it to record the idiot drivers!

    aterfy27,
Welcome to the camera club :) . The main purpose of backup cameras is to show you things you can't see out the rear window
ie. if there was a kid playing behind your car or if you are close to backing into something. Your camera's aim looks perfect for that.

I'm glad my parents trained me to NOT play behind moving vehicles! :)
You should always be aware of your surroundings so you don't run over anyone.
I did think it would be nice to have a backup camera. So I found one that also had the front one.
And they both record. But I don't use it for backing up, I tried, but it's easier to use the side mirrors
    and looking behind.
I've NEVER hit anyone or anything while backing up. Except when I wanted too! :) :)

Are there any technician locally in Dallas TX area where I can buy and install them. (Except Geek Squad, they charge too much)

How did you get the banner showing at the bottom of the screen?

    boywander,
On my 2012 Prius, the HU puts up the "Check Surroundings" message. My camera puts up the guide lines.

Thanks our1vue for the answer. So I bought the same camera as this write up and I own an 2012 non nav as well. So this is the text inlays from the HU when I installed this camera? Pretty cool!

    tw1nturb0,

I just found out this great thread in this forum on this project. I would love to be the receiving end for the voltage regulator/pins if you still got them. Much thanks in advance!

    Boywander,
If your HU works the same as mine you should get the text message. One thing I didn't understand is
why the HU didn't put up the guide lines too. The camera should just do the picture and the HU should add
the "enhancements". But then again I didn't design it.
