    I'm NOT an engineer.
But I know a lot of you are.
    So my question is...
Would the adoption and application of the "Dynamic Force Engine" be a challenge, simple, hampered, or impossible for a vehicle that is simultaneously employing a Atkinson Cycle engine?

This engine is already in the Camry hybrid.

If it or a sibling isn't in the next Prime, it is because Toyota decided sticking with older technology was a good trade off for keeping costs and price down. If the hybrid Prius is still around, it will use it.

actually - some of us (including Bob) PC folk HAVE spoken w/ Prius engineer folk - & we were speaking English.

there is at least one hybrid already that has no 12v aux battery so ... yes, that expectation is already available.

I have a Lowance chartplotter/fishfinder on my boat. The screen is readable even in direct sunlight and there is never any reflection off of it (and out on the lake you have a lot of chances for direct glare). it's not polarized so I can read it with any sunglasses I choose to wear.

I don't see any reason they couldn't be combined. the Atkinson cycle, in simple terms, means that the compression and expansion strokes are of different volumes (this used to be done with linkages, but now they just keep the intake open and blow out some of the mixture during the compression stage and simulate the Atkinson cycle).

You're right. But the reason was cost (and weight as secondary consideration) - they wanted to take advantage of using the same parts as the regular Prius to keep costs down for the plug-in. This is why there's a one-way clutch and why they used MG1 as part of the "dual motor" setup, instead of slapping on a larger MG2.

I was talking through a translator for the Gen 4/Prime engineer. (I was at the Prime event at NYC)

    - A male block heater outlet located in the charge port bay for those of us in cold climates. That way you don't have one cord sticking out of each end of the car.
    - Free software upgrades for the Nav. system. If my $170 Garmin GPS can support this, then so can Toyota (although Apple/Android auto would be even better).
    - The ability to manually turn off or limit number of "reverse gear beeps"

Well then my question would become is the engine in the Camry Hybrid an Atkinson cycle engine?
Because I assume the Dynamic Force Engine in the Toyota Corolla is NOT an Atkinson cycle engine.

    Never mind...
I got off my butt and did some digging myself, to find Toyota's Dynamic Force Engines do already exist in Non-Hybrid and Hybrid engine forms.

So I guess I agree. Unless Toyota was just vetting the system, in the real world, it should be an evolutionary step for Prius.

The dynamic Force engines are Toyota's newest family of engines with the hybrid port and direct inject, plus their more advanced valve timing. The Prius line and other models should see it installed with their next generation. But there is markets and price points to consider. The Toyota Yaris still has a 4 speed automatic to keep it cheap in the US, and the Valvematic valve timing system is only available on the high end Corolla engine in the US, while being standard in Europe.

The main difference between Otto and modern Atkinson cycles is in the valve timing. There are traditional cars with engines on the road that can adjust their valve timing to almost be running as a hybrid Atkinson under light loads. An engine for the hybrid may have its 'compression' ratio a little higher than the non-hybrid version to make its Atkinson cycle more efficient, but this and valve changes are minor for a major engine company.

One other thing to consider... Atkinson cycle engines simulate a smaller displacement engine than an otto cycle engine. Therefore you get less power out of an Atkinson cycle engine than you would out of an otto cycle of the same displacement (you extract more power from the amount of fuel used but since you're using less of the compression cycle you end up using less fuel which is why hybrids like it).

Thanks! Do you know if they charge for that if we request it during one of our regular services?

a block heater cord? It's not even needed! Some plugins actually use the J plug to pull power to heat/cool their motors AND packs/inverters. Like i mentioned above - if you're going to dream .....

    Solar roof

    10% more battery range

    All black interior

A REAL leather option (or change the current stuff to something more durable)

I’m starting to really reach.... all I know is I’m happy with my prime advanced and if they put a solar roof on the next one.... I’ll trade in my 14’ Prius C in a heartbeat.

    1) Apple Car play
    2) Add some buttons to the info screen dedicated to climate control and knobs for volume
    3) Update the screen so it responds quicker and modernize the UI. Glass screen.
    4) 16KWH battery mounted under the floor.
    * 7.6 KWH onboard charger - Max for public L2 chargers.
    * Give the electric motor more power.
    5) 5th seat. ;)
    6) Liquid cooled battery with tech to use exhaust heat to warm the battery.
    7) Subwoofers under the driver and passenger seats.
    8) Copy Volts oil monitoring system. If I drive 90% EV I want to change the oil at 7500 miles of gas use
    9) Optimize the ICE to minimize cycle start.
    * An secondary electric oil pump to pre-lub before engine starts and to cycle engine without gas.
    * The electric motor can turn over the pistons and valve train with out gas while your plugged in.
    10) Center console and trunk AC outlet for laptops. With charge mode you have a mobile power generator.

Also beyond the Prius. Take the plug in tech and put it in a Tacoma pickup truck, Sporty Supra / 86, SUV / Crossover.

Can you imagine a 2JZ hybrid motor with electric motors driving the front and boosting the rear. The torque of a electric with the high speed power of an ICE engine.

Toyota could redeem their hesitation for waiting for the electric market to evolve.

You could also look into Carista usb dongle and app. I was able to modify a few settings using it.
