While it is expensive to repair the damage, I can't help thinking about how many expensive parts are available in good shape on that car.
Things like the rear hatch and window, windshield, complete interior, 11" screen, wheels, front and rear bumper, headlight clusters, the traction battery and the parts that control the charging. If the OP spent $900 to have his windows tinted, I wonder if it would be cost effective to take them out and install on his new car. If he lived in my area I would seriously think of buying the car and having a lifetime supply of spares for mine.

And I'll be paying another $900 next week to get the Huper-Optik Autobahn put back on

I'm pretty sure the insurance company will make bank off of the spare parts from the car. Everything except the underside of the vehicle was in pristine condition.

I paid $180 and they included a lifetime warranty. Gotta love the Hoosier State!

    Thanks @Prime_Time .

Totally agree - I used to have $250 tint jobs installed on previous vehicles and there is a massive difference between those and the higher end stuff. Enough to be worth the difference? Yes, definitely if you tend to keep your cars for longer periods of time.

With climate change and global warming, it is definitely worth the investment to me.

Thanks @jerrymildred - Picked up my new 2018 Blizzard Pearl Prime yesterday. Now I have to go and do all those little things I had done on my 2017 all over again.

Need to pick up a new set of LED bulbs for the Prime's interior lighting (I mean seriously Toyota? Still haven't replaced the incandescent interior bulbs with LED's????).

Tinting it again is going to cost some serious cheddar as discussed before. Also need to get a set of door edge guards. Bah...

    Hi Pdog808,

I'm currently going through a total loss claim with my insurance company. Our car was hit on the right side with damage to both doors. The repair plus labor estimate for all the panels, airbags, and pillars came in at around $19k and they decided to be a total loss since a brand new Prime Premium is only $30k msrp before any incentives. They offered me $28,500 for ACV actual cash value, our car was a used 2018 Prius Prime Premium with 4,000 miles on odometer. I'm curious, how much did your insurance company give you for your total loss?

    Prime Regards, -Joe

Good wax and it will buff right out..... ;)

So glad nobody hurt. It does hurt to see your car mangled. 2019 should be an even better model!

When they make that kind of offer, insist they buy you a replacement with the same options and mileage. You don't care how little they spend, or how much.

This is why I have AAA insurance. They don't work the way typical insurance works. When my car is damaged I just take it to whatever shop I want to do the repairs and let AAA know where it is. I never hear from anybody again except when the body shop calls to say the car is ready. There's no adjuster to deal with, no bickering about the price. Maybe that goes on between AAA and the body shop, but I've never even heard a peep from the shop or AAA about it. It's literally zero hassle.

From my state's AAA web site:
Collision coverage pays to fix or replace your car if it's overturned or damaged in a collision with another car or object. Your insurance company pays for damages, less your deductible, for the cost of your repairs or the actual cash value of your car, whichever is less, regardless of who is at fault.

"Actual cash value." That's what's on the table when a car is a total loss. It sounds like Joe got a fair offer. He can do checking on what is available at what prices and certainly ask for more if he has anything to justify it. If he takes an offer and buys new, he'll also get the federal tax credit and any state tax credits available to him.

William, if the fine print in your car insurance policy says that you have the option of insisting that they buy the car for you, let us know. Every policy I've had says that they pay...not they buy.

My insurance company should be sending me a check soon for actual cash value of $28,500. The nice surprise is that they also add on another $2500 for the sales tax that I paid for the car when it was new.

$31k for a used Prime Premium sounds like a fair deal to me. For our next car I’m looking at 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid (Prius Prime drivetrain) or a 2019 Nissan Leaf Long Range (with 220 miles of EV) sorry might have to jump off the Prius ship...
