J.D. Power ranked the Prius 3rd among Dependable Compact cars - 1st Honda Civic, 2nd Toyota Corolla. I thought the Prius is a midsize car. http://www.jdpower.com/corporate/news/rele....asp?ID=2006133
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(dancekat59 @ Aug 9 2006, 03:07 PM) </div> Maybe they measured it after it was in cold water....hate it when that happens
note that the study was based on the '03 model, aka Gen 1: 88.6 cubic ft passenger volume 11.8 cubic ft cargo volume 2765 pound curb-weight 100.4 inch (8.4 ft) wheelbase 169.6 inch (14.1 foot) length 66.7 inch (5.6 foot) width 57.6 inch (4.8 foot) height versus the Gen 2: 96.2 cubic ft passenger volume 16.1 cubic ft cargo volume 2890 pound curb-weight 175 inch (14.6 ft) length 67.9 inch (5.7 ft) width 58.1 inch (4.8 ft) height So the Gen 2 is quite a bit bigger than the gen 1, which could explain the "compact" rating in this report, while we know it's a midsized. credit goes to john1701a for having compiled info sheets for both Classic (Gen 1) and Current (Gen 2).
According to IIHS, the Gen 2 Prius is still considered a "compact"/small car due to weight and shadow.

prius is definitely not a compact car. I feel that it's a lot roomier than my old 95 full sized lumina!
The Prius is an odd car in this respect. It has extraordinary interior space for the size of the car. Many auto discussions class the Prius as a compact because of the external size. The EPA classes the Prius as a mid-size based on the interior space.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(jfschultz @ Aug 10 2006, 12:15 PM) </div> But that's the rub... the interior space also includes the hatch space, since the hatch area is not separated from the interior area at all. So if there were a divider between the rear and the hatch, the prius would be a compact.

Anyone notice Oldsmobile A car that hasn't been made in almost 3 years is ranked 13th in a survey of 2006 cars? Makes me question the validity of that article............ <_< <_< <_<
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(BobZ @ Aug 14 2006, 06:48 AM) </div> Well, it is rating cars over the last 4 years... so it's perfectly valid.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Jonnycat26 @ Aug 14 2006, 06:59 AM) </div> I missed that. Saw the 2006 part then saw olds and well whatever. I'm 6' 4" (even after the pool) hehehe and I fit in my Pri' reasonably well
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Jonnycat26 @ Aug 10 2006, 01:29 PM) </div> Sorry, that's not correct: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/info.shtml#sizeclasses The interior space includes the trunk on regular sedans too. So the Prius would still be mid-sized even if there were a divider.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Jonnycat26 @ Aug 10 2006, 07:29 PM) </div> of course, that is not true. There is no interior rating influenced by that. Reason Prius is considered midsize is that its wheelbase is a lot larger than compact car wheelbase, and hence you have a lot more interior space in Prius. I am pretty sure that Prius has more space for back passangers than new Camry...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(spwolf @ Aug 17 2006, 07:45 PM) </div> I got a 2007 Camry (non-hybrid) as a loaner for 4 days when my Prius had a coolant valve problem pop up on my third day of ownership. It seemed the Camry felt larger width-wise than the Prius (like three people in the back wouldn't be as squished in the Camry as in the Prius), but I thought the Prius had better legroom. Just observations...
